The game is phenomenal. I played Cave Story 3D and had to get the PC version for myself, This game holds up really well and it makes sense why this game is one of the forefathers of Indie games. I highly recommend this to other people... if it displayed correctly on modern screens and was compatible with modern computers. Hell, my PC is from 2017 and the game doesn't even fit on the screen. The compatibility troubleshooter listed this game as an "incompatible program", and after having solved the issue, something happened to steam overlay and both my monitors freaked out switching from my desktop to a black screen and back forth. Cave Story+ is a fantastic game but it's messy to fix and make display properly. If you want to play Cave Story, I recommend you play it on anything else that's not PC. Play it on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii. Fuck, play the original 2004 game with the Aeon Genesis fan translation, etc,. Please Nicalis fix the display issues with this beloved game I beg you.

it's cave story. what am i, gonna leave a negative review? there's only good things to say about this game. it's a timeless classic

Ever since playing the original fan translation, probably at least 20 years ago now, Cave Story has been one of my all-time favorite games, and I think if anyone is a fan of retro style platformers, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

Heartwarming. First played the fan made Megadrive port of this game, but i had to buy it on steam eventually. The character interactions, the soundtrack, the gameplay... everything is so freaking good. Buy this game. Please support studio pixel, they need the money, This game is so freaking good. 10/10

This is a classic. So much fun. I wasn't sure if I would like Cave Story. A lot of people told me to give it a try and I am happy I listened to them. If you like Metroidvania type games then get Cave Story.

Once again I'm playing a game from my childhood. This one is special though. This is THE game from my childhood. The artwork, music, sound design, etc. Every aspect of this game brings happy memories and good vibes. However, when I play it now I realize that it isn't just a wonderful game to me because of nostalgia, but because I'm much more well versed in what I believe a great game to be, and this game meets all the criteria. Cave Story is a magical experience that I wish for everyone to enjoy. A true classic, and a true masterpiece. If you value indie games, please play Cave Story. You won't regret it. Much love.

I wish steam had a mixed option, since that's how I feel about this game... the art is very pretty and the world is somewhat interesting but the writing and characters are kind of bare bones, along with the janky controls. I'm sure I would've enjoyed this game more if I had played it when I was much younger but it just doesn't hold up to my current standards.

After playing this game I reached such a level of autism that every time someone mentions a indie game, I respond of whether it is a "Cave Story" or an "Earthbound." I do not tell anyone what the criteria is, I just insert it into the conversation. Minecraft is a Cave Story. Five Nights at Freddy's is an Earthbound. Undertale is an Earthbound, despite taking place underground/in a cave. Sally Face is a Cave Story. I could go on forever.

It's difficult for me to give this a no for a recommendation because this really should be the definitive version of the game, but it's not. I really love the new sprite art, love the quality of life fixes in some places, better controller support etc. and can even look past the fact that the game runs 20% faster than the freeware original. What kinda kills this for me is the new localization. It seems like there's some really unnecessary changes in this one, what was wrong with Balrog having "huzzah!" being his catch phrase? Why does he have to be the Kool-aid man? It seems unnecessary to have that reference here. I would play the original freeware version of the game first if you haven't already, there's mods that allow for better controller support and some of the QOL updates this release has as it will also give you the superior localization done by Aeon Genesis. Other than that, this is a totally ok version of the game to grab.
