As someone who absolutely adores Hypnospace, a spin-off focused on probably its funniest and most iconic side character seemed right up my alley, and the fact that this still manages to harness the spirit of the 90s, now in the form a boomer shooter instead of a fictional internet simulator is all too fitting. Ultimately, this really isn't going to blow you away if you have played one of the granddaddies of shooters like Doom, Duke Nukem, or Quake, but it still is a perfectly serviceable little FPS game with tons of secrets and replay value that looks scarily similar to the games of yesteryear.
However, you're really going to get the most mileage out of this if you've already played Hypnospace, especially considering how well they managed to incorporate that same human element that the original game was so good at. Levels where you were just one second plowing through foes take on a strange, almost melancholic vibe as you search for where you need to go next. All the places are based off of the character Zane's own personal experiences. Fairgrounds, cul-de-sacs, a trailer park. All empty and devoid of any life. Coupled with the awesome hard-rock soundtrack suddenly transforming into a hauntingly soothing version of its former self. It almost feels reflective, like you're going through a photo album to reminiscence about places from your childhood, clinging t the past and wanting to revisits those days. There's also a genuinely saddening fourth-wall breaking secret you can find in one of the last levels that don't dare spoil, but it really just ties those same feelings you'd get from the aimless wondering all together. This is also the same game where you fight sentient gobs of poop and where rats drive vehicles to help assist you in the epic final battle against the guy who banged your mom. So yeah, its pretty good.
