I don't like doing a negative review like this one but sometimes it is best to be honest with yourself rather than vaguely mention something without going into specifics. Before I rant, I'll start with the positive.

+The Pros

Pixel sprite:
If you don't know already, this game is based on an anime called Overlord, which is an anime where the protagonist unexpectedly ended up trapped in an RPG video game. From what little I know of the anime, I'll say the pixel character sprite is one of this game's strengths, as every character silhouette appears like its original counterpart, making them recognisable. Pros for the artists for transitioning these characters from the anime to the game.
Mace:
One mechanic I wanted to give a big thumbs up to is the mace weapon. You will get given this game a little early into the game, using it not only as a secondary weapon to deal damage to enemies but for versatility as well. Relying on it to move around, using it like a grappling hook to attach yourself to appropriate surfaces and swinging across to climb or to manoeuvre elsewhere. A lot of the time, you will be finding yourself using the mace to swing around, aiming where you want to get to and releasing from whatever you are attached to at the right time to make the jump, either trying to attach to another surface or make the jump you normally couldn't without it.
At first, it can be tricky to get used to the mace, but the more you use it, the more you will be able to master this weapon, making it more satisfying the more you get the hang of it and use it to your benefit. I'm glad we get to try this toy rather than just having your standard grappling hook, which is pretty common in many games.
Story:
There's nothing much to the story, but I did like how the scenario was constructed as a good excuse for this game to be a game in the first place. Lore-wise and personality-wise, it makes sense for the characters to do what they are doing. If only there were more original content and some more characterisation presented to make this game slightly more worth it.

-The Cons

Well, the positive stuff didn't last long. Onto the bad.
Gameplay:
Overlord: Escape From Nazarick goes by the no touch-me rule, meaning that your character will instantly go knocked down when the enemy touches, yes touches you, not just their attacks, when the enemies make any contact with you, you get knocked down, sometimes with little recovery time if the attack deals a lot of damage to you making it possible for you can get stunlocked if you don't get up fast enough. All of this gets really, REALLY ANNOYING overtime, especially in bossfights.
Bossfight:
Speaking of bossfight, this whole gameplay ruins it for them. You can't traverse around the area as much as you could, so you don't get hit by any attacks. Your only options are to not move a lot, whereby trying to avoid as many attacks as you can, then, when you have the chance, attack them with weapons that have the highest speed to spam quick damage to cheese the fights, every time. Once I figure out this is the strategy I need to apply to be able to defeat bosses throughout the game, that's when I turn my brain off and just go with the flow to complete this game as soon as possible.
The gameplay is just horrible. I wish played this til the first bossfight all these years ago when I first purchased and played this game so I could recognise the flaws. I only played this instantly, and it only then registered how
poorly made
unsuitable this game is for my playstyle. I wish I had played it longer before the 2-hour mark so I could get a refund back then. Instead, I'm stuck with it, so I might as well play as much as I can to get some of the money's worth. I know; I could have easily deleted this game and forget about it altogether. I almost did, in fact, but I feel inclined to see the rest of it through and to warn people about it. I needed to see the rest of the flaws; that's my reasoning for finishing the game, at least that's how I sleep with the shame.
Map:
The map is a bit of a mixed bag. They're pretty standard, but they're not always accurate, partly because it didn't depict the level design properly. They were also not accurate about the rewards I know for sure I've collected before. I even revisit the places just to double check, and what do you know, there's nothing more there still. Occasionally, I found the map recorrecting itself, which is annoying and puts me in a position to not take it trust it.
Other problems:
Some mechanics are not truly utilised to the full extent. For example, the slow-motion ability was completely abandoned right after the tutorial, before the game was about to finish. There is no other reason to use that skill unless I wanted to explore a bit more by revisiting places I couldn't go before, but I don't feel inclined to do so due to lacklustre weapon rewards as it is about stats increase, nothing more which is a big no, no for a metrovionia game.

Conclusion

DON'T BUY THIS GAME!.That's all I'm gonna say. Nothing more, nothing less. Saved your money for a better metroidvania game. One that's so much better than this one. Don't make the same mistakes I did. That is all.

If you were to ask me about a game for the Overlord franchise I'd not expect a metroidvania game. Still its alright and fun enough for an any% play through so long as you get it at a discount. The game is a bit too linear for my taste and the controls could really use some work. If you like the anime/LN you'll probably like this game, but I'd also recommend to play any Metroid or Castlevania game first.
