ok so, i enjoyed The Forsaken Maiden quite a lot, but I also think that the mixed review this game has is definitely valid and reasonable. For me, it was a great game up until the end (final chapter to be exact), and it kinda went downhill from there and it definitely ruined my view of it quite a lot. first of all, i love the gameplay changes. Having 4 characters in the party makes it a bit more fun and gives a player more room for some combinations. Link skills are pretty fun as well. AND having the two other characters switch between each chapter doesn't make it too stale (cough cough U don't end up always sticking to Ridis in any situation cough cough). BUT somehow fighting became even more routine-like and gets tiring VERY quickly. Especially in the final dungeon (and the heart world as a whole?), I was SO tired of fighting i couldn't wait for it all to finish A lot of people talk badly of the final fight, but personally, i had 0 problems with it and i enjoyed the whole thing quite a lot. Yes, it's definitely a bit annoying that if you die you have to re-do all the fights, but i can't imagine dying more than once... the fights are challenging but not too much and i liked it a lot. I liked the overall story more than i did the first game. It's more interesting and i like all the different maiden/attendance/island relationships the show. It's definitely a bit predictable, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of it too much. BUT... the "endings" are... disappointing. Playing through it once (when you have to make a certain choice) i was awed. I thought it was heartbreaking but really good. Up until my choice didn't really matter and there was only one sentence that acknowledged it. There was no consequences to it and it felt pretty shallow. In the end, even though technically there is 3 "endings", it might as well just be 1. Which is a huge disappointment compared to the first game and, honestly, kinda ruined The Forsaken Maiden to me. But, aside from that, i still think its pretty solid. Don't skip it if you playing the trilogy, but maybe don't play it on its own.

The second entry to the series builds up on the first game to deliver a more refined experience. Same as the first game, cards and tabletop game mechanics are used to tell a story. This entry seems to be most difficult out of all entries in the series. Story this time is much longer and you can see some of that writing you can experience in NieR games. There are no multiple endings this time around but the world seems to be more fleshed out when compared to the first game. To those concerned on how it connects to previous entry:
Events in the game happen before the first game. You'll know after you experience the events of the East isle.
Another shitty boss gauntlet at the end after a long and boring final dungeon. I like the story in these games but everything else pretty much just gets in the way.
