Easily one of the best games ive played in a while. The lore, the exploration, the ost, the gameplay, the secret hunting and the level design is to die for.
I will say, I consistently referenced guides and an online map. This could have been avoided by me knowing simply that not all areas connect. So if you feel like you've explored an entire area and can progress, backtrack and your path is likely in the level you just came from. I was inadvetendly grinding in one area due to me thinking "man I must just be missing something".
Its certainly old school for the above reason, as well as the fact as well as for the fact that there is no journal, no notes, and you if you die, you respawn at your last save crystal. The game is also somewhat non-linear.
All of that works in this games favor and delivers an unforgettable experience.

It's exactly what I want in a first person dungeon crawler. It's not a fucking souls-like. Please let me pause the game. Thank you.

A very fun dungeon crawler, not to disclose this. I did occasionally glance over at a map guide to figure out where tf I was meant to go. Because this game will not hold your hand in the slightest, you will get lost. You will wonder around for an hour or so before figuring things out. It did almost make me put the game down to be honest. But once I got my build going I had a blast with the rest of the game. I 100% the games achievements as well, and if you just play the game and explore, you shouldn't really need to grind for much during the clean up. Although if you do go for all achievements, go for the normal ending first, ending E will lock you out of that. But you can get all the other endings on one file so you should be good with one play through. But yeah, amazing game, amazing music, amazing everything. 10/10. gonna buy the ost just so i can jam out to it in the background.

This game rules.
Definitely not for the easily frustrated. Old school style, dying sets you back to your last save - not last checkpoint or crystal (bonfire), but the last time you saved the game. Sometimes those points are pretty far apart, so a death can mean a huge setback.
If you like secret-hunting this is 100% for you. There's a huge amount of hidden things to find, even whole areas that can be entirely missed.
Fun combat, very nice soundtrack.
Big recommend.

An absolute gem of a throwback game, filled with magic and charm! I loved every moment of my time with it, especially finding new spells and secrets. Looking forward to the prequel with much excitement!

I don't really get this one, i'm a big fan of Kings Field and keep trying to get into Lunacid but for whatever reason I keep bouncing off of it. Other than the out of place anime characters in the hub world there's nothing that sticks out to me as "I don't like this", but regardless I can never get deep into it and enjoy myself. The atmosphere of the main levels and accompanying soundtrack are some of my favourites in a long while, the oppressive mood is seriously astounding and they did a great job with it. Just wish I ended up liking it more.
PS: Don't be like me and get baited into using "Legacy Mode" controls in the options. I've been wanting a Kings Field homage game with tank controls for a while now... while it makes fighting a lot more threatening and fun to work around, it also flatly halves your movespeed for some reason. While this works in making combat feel more like Kings Field, the levels themselves aren't designed for it, so you move painfully slow through empty hallways and it's really not worth it. Part of the reason i'm reviewing this at all is to remind myself not to do it the next time I attempt to play this game

I was not an old school King's Field Gamer. While I was certainly gaming at the time it never really interested me.
Flash forward to now and I picked this up because of a recommendation from playing Dread Delusion.
This was by far one of the best games I played this year and I thoroughly enjoyed everything it had to offer.
Dungeon Crawler is such a simple concept but always put me off because I always thought they were just simple, same old corridor, kind of games.
This game has truly sold me on the concept and now I have wish listed a bunch of others coming soon!
Worth the money and time!

My opinion after beating the game is very mixed. It has a very good premise and lets you learn about the world through dialogue and books you find. It has very charming PS2 era graphics with varied locations and music as well as the character art and audio design is good, though some areas had a strange music choice that didn't seem to fit.
Exploration is the game's most fun aspect and selling point. It was enjoyable finding a new area to explore, but the exploration focus sometimes is the most frustrating part about the game. I know that people are used to modern RPGs telling you exactly where to go and what to do, but sometimes you can be completely stuck and not know where to go or how to progress simply because you didn't realize a simple clue. Other places were downright unfair or irritating either by being a winding labyrinth with dead ends and pointless areas, or by having insta kill traps which are even more frustrating given you have to reload a save, no way to recover your lost XP or progress. I never experienced any crashes, only some annoying bugs. At the end of the game's 50 room gauntlet, after retrieving the reward, I tried to read the tablet beside it only to get locked out of all controls and was forced to restart the game and do it over.
The combat can be very clunky with many enemies just being complete damage sponges with no choreographed attacks. The bosses are even worse, both of the boss fights I encountered were just a complete DPS check damage sponge until it was over. Leveling however is very well done, the levels you choose can give not just HP or damage, but faster movement speed or casting speed.
For me it came down to the price tag. Especially if you like the graphics style and appreciate exploration in games, it is easily worth the low price.
