Dead buggy garbage. Another early access swindle.

This is actually very much worth the $5 USD price. I got it on sale for a little less than $4, so it's a keeper for sure. I was having trouble at first, and then my oldest son picked it up and figured it out, even though it is a little lacking on the tutorial side for my liking. So you are trying to survive, by crafting weapons from nearby materials, and sometimes building up barriers to slow down the onslaught of zombies. There are limited amounts of guns to use, and reloading is sometimes not timely enough to prevent injury, damage or death. You are usually better off clubbing the zombies are few times because it is quicker. Crafting needs to occur in Workshop areas, and the game is good about making it obvious which materials can be assembled to make a weapon. There is quite a bit here, albeit this game could use some good updates and add more detail, better graphic, etc. For the price, it is a steal.
A Gem, yet to be Found

As the store page states it, this game is made by a small team and is designated as an early access title. But early access is not the right word for what we got here so far. Think about Apocalyptic Adventure: Episode 1 as an advanced Demo of what this series might can become in the near future. The coremechanics are already fleshed out, the menu and backpack system is on a good way, Your inventory, which can be grabbed from your back, works as you place it in the world intuitively. Especially while crafting weapons and tools at one of the many workbenches, you get a feeling for the intuitive "grabbing in the bag" to get your resourcess. In addition to the backpack storage on your back for big things, the player got a small pouch on the lef hip in which utility items, like stones, bombs and ammo can be stored and quickly acessed. To get rid of the infected hordes which come at you as you progress threw the map, the player mostly relies on melee combat. While beeing able to use your fists to push the infected away, the game tells you quite early that the use of tools, handcrafted weapons and traps are the way to go against the undead. Handgun combat is also part of the game, while ammo is always low and it is meant as the last devestating defence in the most tragic situations. The combat is one part of the gameplay in this first and hopefully not the last Episode. While you fight off the dead, you use a mixture of telportsytem and your physical playspace to move around the world. While doing this, every teleport takes your stamina away which resolves in needing a longer time to teleport and a decreased melee damage. To prevent this from happening, you got to find water for your flask which is located on your chest. To drink from your flask, you simply take it and hold it close to your mouth. Im stating this here because one of the few flaws of the game, is the lack of a complete tutorial. While there are hints in the world on how to do anything, mechnaics like this seem to be not explained enough and you need to try and find out on your own. The lack of detailed tutorials is one thing that needs to be fixed, but what really needs a rework is the melee comabt, or more like the force that comes with it. Enemeys are just stumbling backwards when you hit them, This would be fine if it was with a fist or a hand, but hitting an enemy with a handmade axe for example gives the player little to no satisfying feedback. This leads to really awkward situations in which you are just bumping your tools in the undead until their healthbars deplete. The same goes for the combat with guns. The player gets a handgun very fast in the game and while the weapon is most of the times an instant kill, the reloading mechanics are more than janky and not practical at all. Espceially not in hectic situations. An orientation towards the reload mechanics of shooters like Pavlov VR, or Onward would be a huge benefit for the whole upcoming series.

To sum it up, Apocalyptic Adventure: Episode 1 is an incredible first iterration of a hidden gem here on Steam for every VR and survival fan. While having a few drawbacks on the combat side, the imersion with the intuitive crafting and the traversal threw the levels are well implemented. It feels incredibly polished for an Early Acess title and is a steal for the 3,99€ ( 3,15€ right now). Since it released only a few days ago, I dont know anything about the update schedule of the developer, but since I have a history with several Early Acess titles, I have got a good feeling about this one.

'Apocalyptic Adventure: Episode 1' is a zombie apocalypse survival game in which you try and fight off hoards of zombies with various weapons, most of which you will have to craft yourself from twigs and stones. This first part is set in a woodland area and while there isn't a whole lot of content here there is enough to make me recommend it. The graphics are nothing special, but they are good enough to immerse you into the games post-apocalyptic world. Sure, it could do with some storyline, even if it's just some narration to tell you what is going on and why you are in a forest. Oh, and the lack of smooth motion and snap turning is annoying, but for just £3.99 you get a good first part of a game here and I can't wait to see more of it.
