I liked Chapter 1 and loved Chapters 2-4, but they completely dropped the ball with Chapter 5. Don't read further if you don't want to be spoiled.
My thoughts on Chapter 5:
The pros: Amazing gameplay and art.
The cons: Everything else. Personality, narrative, reveals, all seriously lacking.
Do I think this chapter destroyed the game's potential? No. I'm hoping this chapter will be a blemish on an overall incredible game when the game is completed. I love this game, which is why I feel it should be criticized when it falls short of its potential.
Personality:
I like Flowery. However the problem is I think Toby bit off more than he could chew. Instead of having one or two new characters this chapter, this time we have 7. I think so much time and effort was invested into the gameplay and art for this chapter, they forgot to fully flesh out these characters to the standard we've come to expect.
Flowery was by far the most interesting character, as he was meant to be, however rather than focusing on fleshing out his character, we introduced 6 other unremarkable and frankly annoying side characters that took away time that could've been spent making him more interesting. I love how Flowery calls out the main cast. He calls out the hypocrisy of them sealing Dark Fountains when they have their own personal Dark World with all their friends. It's selective judgement, rules for thee not for me, and I loved having that be confronted. Another time, when Susie says Asgore is nuts, and Flowery responds with something along the lines of "what were you like before you met your friends?". That level of confrontation was great to see. The friction between Ralsei and Flowery was interesting as well. I wish that the chapter did more of this, rather than mess around with the other 6 characters which honestly felt like filler content. Also, where were the lyrics for the Flowery boss fight? I get that maybe Toby Fox got cold feet and thought people would hate the boss theme if it had actual singing, but the lyrics were great, and I wished that I got to hear them rather than having to read them at the top of the screen when I should be fighting the boss.
Narrative and Reveals:
This was the ASGORE chapter. By the end of the chapter, we learned literally nothing about Asgore. All we learn is that he was obsessing over proving the existence of the Dark Worlds to try to alleviate some guilt for some incident that happened in the past. That obsession caused a permanent rift in his family, and it only spiraled him further downward since he felt if only he could prove he wasn't at fault, his life would go back to the way it was. While I love that part of Chapter 5, we already put a lot of those pieces together. We already knew Asgore was involved with Dark Worlds, that he felt responsible for some incident, and it connected to Dess. We finish this chapter with no additional revelations, just confirmations. With the way this chapter was being hyped by Toby's newsletters, we were expecting much more. More information on Dess, Ralsei, more Snowgrave content than a 5 minute cutscene. The previous chapters were very good at dripfeeding information, giving us just enough to allow us to speculate about what comes next. The only new information we get in this chapter apart from confirmations is that Ralsei knows Kris is opening the dark fountains, he just doesn't do anything because he has faith in Kris. And don't get me wrong, that Snowgrave cutscene is amazing, but then we're presented with a screen that says "see you in Chapter 7 lol" and the game just closes. I can't imagine Toby not knowing this kind of thing would anger and disappoint fans.
Side note: Kris does nothing interesting:
We see Kris open another Dark Fountain. Awesome, we knew that they've been doing that already. Susie begins to suspect them for what seems like only a moment, only for them to go "nah definitely not". And that's the extent of which Kris is shown to be relevant in any way in this chapter. Flowery seems to know Kris and the purple one had met with Kris, interesting except that already happened with Tenna, it isn't that surprising anymore that Kris would have known these characters before the fountain's creation. At the end of the chapter, Kris picks up the Shelter code, and right before the slowest possible attempt of ripping it up, Susie runs in and grabs it and says "wow look at this, looks like we can go to the shelter now" and that's that. It feels like lazy writing, not bad but not interesting.
Thoughts on new secret boss:
The secret bosses in Chapters 1-4 were amazing. Jevil entertained the idea of perspective, instead of being locked up in jail, he was the only free one while the world around him was shut behind bars. He introduced the freedom motif that would be a staple later. Spamton Neo, a puppet on strings that desperately wants to be free, having their strings cut only to fall to the ground powerless, has Kris screaming in frustration into the distance after the fight, hinting to the Kris/player dynamic and how Kris saw a parallel. Absolutely amazing. The Roaring Knight fight had people speculating how Kris is working together with the knight, with a lot of small details promoting that idea. Gerson spurred on Susie's growth as a character, hinting that she'll be the one to take control of her own fate, something both Ralsei and Kris seem to be unable to do.
The Chapter 5 secret boss? We got Mew Mew. Don't get me wrong, I love the fight, but it felt like a boss fight that fits better in Castle Town. I don't believe that the fight reveals anything about the Kris/soul dynamic like I've seen some speculate. It felt more like an allegory about loving yourself than anything else, and when compared to the absolute home-runs that preceded it, felt lack-luster in terms of narrative.
Overall, incredibly disappointed in this chapter. Maybe my expectations were too high. I've read a lot of other people's thoughts on this chapter, and I have to say, the vast majority of the negative feedback is justified. Lock in on Chapters 6 and 7 and I'll change this review. I'm still eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

It's not UNDERTALE, it's... something way cooler.
Everything from the battle system to walking has been improved on substantially since UNDERTALE, and since the first chapter released.
I'm not going to lie, I think Toby should dedicate some budget to going back and making chapters 1 and 2 more quality assured with more animation and lighting effects like chapters 3, 4, and 5 are positively brimming with. They make chapter 1 and 2 look crusty in comparison.
Chapter 3's gimmick was pretty fun as well as chapter 5's gameplay gimmick. Overall, good game

One of the best games of all time. Tobias Fox has masterfully crafted such a compelling narrative and composed a kick ass soundtrack to go along with it. It blows my mind that it's only really him and a few other people working on this. Absolutely brilliant man and yes I know I am glazing hardcore he deserves it. I haven't played Undertale yet, but now I have to and I'm so pumped. IT'S ALL CONNECTED (insert picture of a guy in front of a cork board with red string).

Deltarune is an absolutely stunning game that changed my life before I knew it.
It led to me meeting my closest friends, and has inspired me so much.
Otherwise, the music is amazing; every track hits the note it needs to. The gameplay is fun, and I love the humour of the game, especially in battle flavour text. The pixel art is beautiful as well.
However, when it really comes down to it, it's the story that really drew me in and affected and helped me in so many ways. It's touching, and it makes Deltarune easily one of the best games I have ever played. The dialogue is well written, the jokes hit, and it moves you. I won't spoil it here, though. It really should be experienced for oneself.
If you're unsure about if you'll enjoy the game, the first two chapters are free as a demo! Try it out.

Lifechanging to say the least. Toby Fox is one of my idols I look up too, and to see his humor and storytelling put in probably one of the best RPGs of all time.
Doesn't matter if Toby TAKES TOO LONG on chapters, I always trust the end result to be stunning.
Ever since I started playing this game back in 2022, a few months after Chapter 2 dropped, I've been following it ever since.
Chapter 3 + 4 is an incredible experience and I completely look forward to 5, 6, and 7.

After spending literally all day playing chapter 5, I can confidently say that Deltarune is one of the most important pieces of media to come out in this generation. I can't think of any other game that takes such advantage of the fact that it is a video game, and I believe what Toby Fox and his team have managed here is nothing short of miraculous. Honestly, I could write a behemoth of a paragraph, but another reviewer summarized my thoughts much more eloquently: "basically the second coming of christ in video game form". Yeah, that's pretty much it. Do yourself a favor and play this game
