I enjoy the game but the stuttering and hitching is pretty bad. Not well optimized at all.
The combat system is not my cup of tea.
I I don’t scan every enemy and exploit its weaknesses then all my other attacks are useless.
This breaks the game for me, and having to build stagger is just annoying.
Just let me do raw damage… Enough of the stagger system.
Every fight is tedious and feels like I am having to try way to hard to finish fights without dying or getting combo locked into oblivion.
Some mobs are just op compared to the original.
It’s almost like every enemy is a mini boss.
It has too much dark souls like combat difficulty.
Normal is actually hard mode for me.
I ultimately decided to drop it to easy so I can enjoy the game and story and stop getting pummeled like a rag doll constantly.
I wanted an enjoyable fresh take on this remake. But the combat is making this game no fun for me.
I enjoy more slower paced combat and more ATB.
I do not like having to attack to fill the atb. I just want it to fill over time like in the original.
3/5 for me.

Played this when first released def the best final fantasy game to get into the series in the modern era. 14 is great as well and 10 has aged well. Filler is added in compared to the original FF7, but gameplay is smooth and very rewarding. First of 3 in the trilogy so much more to look forward to!

Took me a few years to get into it then complete it and I wish I did sooner. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and I put that shit on play when I go places. Love the characters and their interactions along with the visuals making this game the right atmosphere to take splendid screenshots.

A fantastic remake of a beloved classic. The environments, art, music, characters and encounters are pretty much exactly what a remake should be - it all looks so lovingly remade, with an insane amount of detail and polish. Hearing old music with brand new instruments and bombastic remixes made me smile every time. Seeing some of the wacky classic enemies get promoted to unique bosses was great. Characters are far more fleshed out, and the key story beats are pretty much identical, with a few new twists.
I heard the game was plagued with technical issues when it originally released, but playing it today as of 2025, it was smooth as butter, without a single hitch or bug in about 50 hours of play. (i7 13700K, 4080, 64gb DDR5, NVME SSD). Unreal Engine games often have issues, even on a machine like this, but this was 100% smooth from start to finish. Even shader compilation was never noticeable. The game has a hard cap of 120fps, and it was rock-solidly running at that without a single dip. Could probably mod it to 240fps too, but it didn't feel necessary.
The environment design, lighting and aesthetic is strikingly beautiful, especially in the really industrial city areas. The towering reactors when you look up at the sky, with the thick smog and vibrant neon lights is a sight to behold. And the Wallmarket area, filled with nightclubs and hanging lanterns had me stopping and staring in awe repeatedly. Playing it maxed out on a HDR OLED screen was a beautiful experience.
Loved absolutely everything about this. They removed the tedious sections, like the stealth minigame, and expanded areas that previously worked. Pretty much every scene / area in the game is expanded by at least 10x the size and length of the original. Tons of new optional areas branch out of the original areas, with side-quests and cool things to find, like new enemy types and bosses.
Combat plays similarly to FF13 / 15, with real-time arena combat, and you can issue commands to the entire party, or just focus on a specific playable character. It all feels very fluid and satisfying.
As soon as it ended, I wanted more and started downloading the next part immediately.

Before playing this I had only played the first part of Final Fantasy 7, and that was enough to make me fall in love with the worldbuilding and the characters.
This remake shows more of the story until the escape from Midgar, which is quite interesting.
Starting with the best points of the game, the combat is an interesting mix between turn-based from the original and real-time action, which works well and with different combat mechanics for each character. Leveling up weapons and choosing their advantages also allows greater flexibility in character development throughout the levels. And the part of inserting materials into the equipment is also another factor that helps in this aspect.
The game's story, with some differences from the original, is quite good. The entire conflict between Avalanche and Shinra is simple but creates interesting challenges for the main team, the villains have understandable objectives, and the Shinra leader has plausible arguments and justifications for his actions, all of this makes the story more interesting. As characters I will highlight Barret, for me the best developed character in this remake. The duality of leading a "terrorist" movement, of having to make the most difficult decisions while at the same time having to take into account the lives that are at stake, including that of his daughter. At the same time, he shows enormous motivation and dedication to his cause. The rest of the main characters aren't far behind either.
The least good points of this game are the fact because of the game being chapter-based and very linear, there are phases in which not all members will be available to be used in combat, this in itself is not the problem but rather the frequency with which it happens.
In combat, the members that are not being controlled not using spells or items also made me a little frustrated but nothing too worrying. And the biggest criticism I have of the game is the cutscenes, the game has very good and very beautiful cutscenes, but there are parts which they are VERY slow, they take a long time to show something simple or to highlight something that could have been quite quick, I even think that most of my playing time was in cutscenes. Despite being very beautiful, they took up a lot of game time in my opinion.
In conclusion I think its a wonderful game and experience for fans and newcomers to the Final Fantasy 7 story and despite its flaws it has some points that make it unique.

Too much filler. Not true to the original story makes this bad. It shouldnt be called ff7 remake rather ff7 filler version. Original ff7 had a really good story that i enjoyed every minute of. The remake does not do it justice. Square Enix trashed a masterpiece of a game. Idiots.

I just started remake, I see others doing the same. It's crazy how remake brings back memories of playing the original when it released, gives me chills. I'm using flawless widescreen software and I am surprised it isn't natively supported but yes rebirth is motive for playing through. I love the content I'm getting from friends

"Mixed feelings" is about the best way to describe my time with Final Fantasy VII Remake. Let's get the obvious out of the way first. No. This remake did not need three games. Are you insane, Square? The original was a pretty excellently paced RPG with a sweeping story with real scope. This is Bloat - The Game.
That aside, the original plot and cast still shine so brightly that this is worth it for seeing those moments replayed here in infinite more detail. And while I'm still more of a fan of turn-based combat in general, I'll freely admit the combat system in Remake is loads better than the original. It's also really cool to see Midgar fleshed out, though at times its scope seems bizarrely confined, especially when the game tries to shoehorn in small sections of an open-world feel.
But.
The parts of Final Fantasy VII Remake that deviate from the original script are pretty glaring. For the most part, this is largely irrelevant. Most of it is just added content and a mixed bag of character moments, and by itself, that would be fine. But then there are moments that actively hurt the plot structure. The most egregious of these is the point at which Jenova is introudced, which is, bizarrely, interrupted by an entirely too long new dungeon in Remake that adds nothing in terms of fun and kills the momentum of the Shinra tower section.
By and large too, what's new just doesn't feel written in the same vein as the original universe. Characters like Roche feel out of place. The "change your fate" plot points feel like someone's AO3 passion project without the fun sexy bits. Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie's new character moments are fun, but ultimately lack any emotional punch.
Then there's the music, which never entirely hits the mark. Some of the early orchestral music shows promise but then the game delves into weirder riffs on the classic score for the sake of... well, being weird. Nothing hits with the same depth and force of the original soundtrack or the many gorgeous takes that have come out since. It genuinely feels like they blew the entire budget on graphics and gameplay, then bought the dollar store composer for the music and the Dave's Discount Tacorium ad writer for the new content.
But, and this is the most important part of this review, there's a ton of heart to FF7 Remake, despite my complaints. The Aerith stuff in particular is very lovingly done, and Cloud's character progression is loads better than the original. Barret gets to play up his comedic role even more, and Hojo is delightfully sinister. The good far outweighs the bad here, but I am left wondering what might have been if they didn't try to Hobbit the everloving hell out of a classic game that didn't really need a lot of this extraneous content. I recommend it, but temper your expectations.
