The Last Stand: Aftermath is okay. It's fun, and more importantly, it gets addicting. I would recommend this to those who really like zombie games and want something more on the survival, slow-paced, horror oriented side of things (take a break from the more intense adventures of Left 4 Dead, Dying Light, and etc.). The Last Stand: Aftermath takes place 15 years after the now shut down The Last Stand: Dead Zone and The Last Stand: Union City, and players are thrust into the role of Volunteers; randomly generated playable characters who are infected and volunteer (hence the name) to make their last stand foraging from the surroundings and passing on knowledge from the world outside of home base, aka, The End. Overall, the game is okay. It can be fun, and getting the knowledge to level up your characters is rewarding and satisfying; by the time you start maxing out skill trees, you'll feel like either John Wick or Batman in the world of zombies. When I played this game, I approached it similarly to Dark Souls; the fun doesn't come from storytelling or polished gameplay. The fun comes from improving and learning from grave mistakes and fails and pushing forward (which is what a lot of players will probably do alot early in the game). But as I said, the game is okay. It's far from perfect, because it's VERY BUGGY. There are times when the game feels like it cheats vs the player, and those are the times it gets frustrating. One time, I mantled over an object through and fence and couldn't get back and had to walk around. Then there were times where I would try to walk around a workbench and keep getting snagged on corners. The worst was during an ambush that I feel like I shouldn't have died since my character was still moving, but it had the Game Over screen anyway. So, if you could endure these technical mishaps, you find some entertainment in the game. I might go back just finish those achievements, but now that I've completed the main story, I say there isn't much reason to go back. (Sees there are post game unlocks...) Or.... crap.... Back on the horse, indeed... **Trivia:** Something I found interesting about the game's premise of using volunteers infected with the zombie virus reminded me of something. While still unique, there was a story that had this premise before (and this is not a knock towards the story of The Last Stand Aftermath): a webcomic called "The Zombie Hunters" by Jennifer Romanchuk that was created back in 2004 had such a premise. The comic has since been on hiatus for years now, but it's interesting to see a similar storyline re-explored within the IP of The Last Stand.

Had some fun in this rogue-lite zombie apocalypse game. The game loop is interesting enough to get keep it fresh for awhile but starts to get samey after awhile. The progression system is rewarding and adds to the success of the next run. Worth a try. Game on!

Great game. Easy until you get modifiers unlocked. Took me 6 attempts to beat 300 danger. Now i gotta do it blindfolded.

This is a good isometric survival shooter. If you are fans of the previous Last Stand games, you will enjoy this one.
The Good:

The environments are well crafted, and every zone feels different.
The enemies are varied enough to not get boring too fast.
The infection mechanic is a very interesting and fun addition to a rogue-like game.
The progression is satisfying, and I found myself running to Trinity every new run to see what I unlocked.

The Bad:

The story is... there. Not the best narrative, to be honest, but it is serviceable.
The aiming could be better. You can only shoot on a 2D plane, and if the enemies are too far above or below you you just miss. Throwables are also finicky.
Not being able to kill zombies as they are falling over barricades is kinda annoying.
The UI is a bit buggy at times. You also never know what attachments are on which guns to you have to play a guessing game every time you want to swap guns.

The Ugly:

The infection machines are hard to see at times, and give no obvious audio cues. You can just get half of your health removed with no warning.
Some of the terrain and buildings can trap you and force you to restart the entire area.
Not sure if it's just user error, but escaping grapples are nearly impossible to pull off.
On sale its a great purchase but a lot of jank. Its a cool pve extraction kinda game where you decide what areas to go to and you can leave and move on to the next area whenever like if there is a tough enemy or no loot areas you aren't really interested in. Characters are used as a resource so if you die you start another run with more character upgrades or usable gear in the start. Only received updates for a year which is a shame cause the game felt like it had more potential. Positives - Good concept - Starting over again is fun since you can see all your new unlocks and feel stronger than the last characters start - Can get pretty tense when your low on resources including max health due to infection mechanic - Looting feels great and meaningful - Crafting system feels great and fun to discover new craftables Negatives - The almost top down view is obnoxious since buildings, roofs, etc will block your view and certain guns feel like ass to use like shotguns and non semi / full auto rifles since your basically just seeing where your shot goes than adjusting instead of being able to meaningfully aim. Even using lasers doesn't always help cause the laser won't always properly work lol - Janky as hell, a lot of your deaths will probably be due to jank like invisible fire or getting stuck - Tutorial is ass and not in a dark souls this is fun to learn on my own way. Feels more unfair than anything to learn as you go since you'll lose characters and forced to trek through the map again, there is 4 sections of different maps you have to go through. - The infection timer heavily punishes stealth to the point where you are just better running around and never crouching unless to shoot the lunging zombies - Weird limiting systems that feel more punishing than anything. Like having a max gas of 5 or only being able to carry one vaccine. So your basically punished for finding more than you can carry in an area. Just feels more annoying than tension building. - Theres no real way to store loot in a usable way for following characters. The stash system is ass since the map pathing can be randomized so you won't always run into the same locations as a previous character did. Just seems dumb there aren't stashes in safe houses but rather just random areas

The Last Stand: Aftermath isn’t a survival game as such, but you are expected to die. Luckily, death isn’t the end here. When you die for the first time, which happens very quickly, you awake as a new volunteer inside a cell. You are already infected and you have been chosen to make your way beyond the walls of the compound, to make your last stand and to help find supplies and information on the outside world. This knowledge you gain is then passed on to other survivors, with each playthrough helping the colonists learn more of the truth behind the renewed zombie threat. Collecting knowledge also helps you upgrade yourself to, once again, better your chances of survival. Different upgrades cost varying amounts of knowledge, covering body, combat, survival and engineering. So, for example, if you want to decrease the cost of stamina or add crafting chests at safe houses, then you need to collect that knowledge. This ensures you’ll want to search every nook and cranny, not just to help yourself, but everyone back at home too. As well as knowledge you also find supply bags and whilst these don’t help with knowledge, they can be used for future volunteers to purchase unlocks and special items back at camp. They are another reason to search literally everywhere. Tense, addictive gameplay loop: Looting, crafting, and managing fuel/infection creates compelling risk-reward tension. Introducing trade-offs like severe infection for powerful perks—e.g. +100% unarmed damage—adds strategic depth. Weathered environments, satisfying weapon sounds, and authentic zombie encounters immerse players. Unlocks and perk carry-over across runs give a rewarding sense of growth. The Last Stand: Aftermath delivers a gripping, atmospheric zombie roguelite with deep mutation systems and a satisfying progression loop. While occasional bugs, difficulty spikes, and repetitive layouts may wear on you, the core gameplay is strong. If you enjoy high-risk, strategic scavenging and don’t mind a challenge, it’s definitely worth playing.
