Pretty much exactly what you would want from a spiritual successor to Contra 3. Tight controls, cool guns, killer theme and visual design, a kick-ass soundtrack and a nice meaty challenge (pun intended). Mirror mode and a plethora of unlockable characters gives some replay value.
Definitely recommended!

Iron Meat is a wonderful love letter to the run and gun genre, in particular Contra. It doesn't want to bring anything to the table besides those feelings that you had as a Gen-Xer, Millennial, or older Gen-Z playing Contra on an Snes and/or Genesis/Megadrive with your siblings or friends on a Thursday evening. the two mechanics it utilizes (weapon switching and weapon upgrading) were present in Contra 3 and Hardcorp: uprising respectively. So again it doesn't do anything new, but it doesn't really want to either.
The game's presentation is classic contra as classic contra can get, you run your dude from left to right, jump flipping and ducking enemy attacks and obstacles while keeping your finger on the fire button until the level clear sign appears. You will acquire weapons that help you deal more damage in slightly novel ways, these weapons can be upgraded to a second teir for faster firing rate and more damage but a single hit will kill you and make you lose what ever selected weapon you have. So, your classic strategy is keep your preferred weapon in your reserved slot for when you want to maximize damage while switching to the other slot when you are unsure of patterns or traversing some complicated obstacle. just classic.
Contra has always had this look of 80's action movie with H.R Giger/Alien undertones, Iron Meat does something very similar. it has the 80's Action movie with the corrupting flesh trope. It's otherworldly meat that consumes and assimilates anything and everything. That hover car now sports tendrils, monster teeth, with pulsating flesh spilling out of cracks in the frame and the driver is now a torso attached by an inhumanly long spinal column with two blasters fused to where the hands are; best blow that up before it becomes a problem. Whats its purpose and goals; Don't know, don't Care. it wants to eat me and cover that planet in Meat. you'd Best get to blasting first and asking questions later.
The music is some 80's/early 90's metal, just goes so well with blasting meat monsters.
I do have some nitpicks, somethings that i feel would just make the game even better than it is if they had been included.
I do wish there was at least a 3rd upgrade tier to weapons, it feels weird to only upgrade once and the next time you just get the super rapid fire power up. make the weapon upgrades feel substantial, change up the weapon enough to make me feel its power and dread losing it. I do appreciate the unlock method for skins, though i would have like something more in there besides the skins, maybe some other weapons or a stage or two. There is also no online play outside of the remote play, workable but i feel like online would be better.
The game is doing particularly well, I have hope that maybe an Iron meat 2 could be on the horizon with maybe unique character loadouts and branching paths.
I highly recommend Iron meat, especially if you are a big fan of contra
Contra done right!
One hour into this game, and I can already guarantee it is a masterpiece. The last time I saw a game that good was with Blazing Chrome (one of my favorite games of all time, of any genre).
Responsive controls, fair gameplay, cool sound effects, amazing soundtrack, interesting bosses, levels that you can beat without having to memorize every single aspect of them and that are longer and much more enjoyable than the usual Contra style: all of these make Iron Meat a must-have in any retro-gamer library, and I'm just halfway through my first playthrough. Totally worth the full price.
This is Contra without the bullshit.

Iron Meat is a great run and gun game very reminiscent of Contra III: The Alien Wars/ Contra Hard Corps. If you ever played a run and gun game before you will feel right at home from the very beginning. Run, gun and pick up powers ups whilst at the same time avoid enemies bullets and bosses attack patterns. The control is really smooth, audio and the soundtrack oozes of run and gun action. Took me about 3 hours to beat it on normal and trying to beat it at hard at the moment. So it's quite short but it's quality through and through, so i recommend buying it on a sale.
Highly Recommend.
