Both this game and Automata are hard to discuss without spoilers, but that being said the combat is really tight, it is a pretty game to look at and the writing is incredible. There are some elements of this game that are a bit dated as it is a remake of a game from 2010 (a couple bossfights and getting all of the endings can be a bit grating). But i absolutely love the story, even hinting to the themes would kinda give it away a bit but it touched me personally in ways that video games just normally dont, and it managed to many times in many ways the surprised me. If I could get everyone in the world to just play one series it would be the NieR series, 10/10 Be ready to cry

While making journeys from town to town looking for a cure, our humble MC finds that the Black Scrawl (the disease) is much more serious than your common cold. The setting of Nier Replicant is beautiful & both the music & art direction lend themselves to that. The desert city, canyon city, seafront village & abandoned machine factory all have varied aesthetics & their themes are all memorable- some of those places I almost wish were real so I could visit. Aside from the occasional invisible wall, there's a lot to love about running, jumping & generally roaming around the open world here. What isn't so fun is the lack of a sensical fast-travel system. The first half of the game straight up doesn't have one & in the second half of the game, sometimes it's there & sometimes it's not but the points you can access it at are always so restricted it's not worth it. If you plan to do all the sidequests, you'll likely triple or quadruple (no exaggeration) the amount of time you spend just running in & out of certain areas to get the best possible RNG; here I'm getting ahead of myself but I'll talk more about this when I cover gameplay. As for voice acting- I think think it pretty much meets your standard RPG or Shonen anime levels with all the campiness to make it worth that title but the voice actor for Grimoire Weiss really stands out. Other than that, the swords are swording, the lasers are lasering & the magic is magicing. My only complaint is that at times, the opaque balls of energy that the enemies use as projectiles sometimes block your view. Even though that happens from time to time- the boss fights are an absolutely amazing spectacle with unique music, creative character design & story beats thrown in for good measure. Often bosses with multiple stages will move from place or transform the fighting arena & it's pulled off really well. The gameplay section is going to be a bit short because there isn't a ton to get into. The MC is given a short sword at the beginning of the game [minor gameplay spoiler]
which expands to three weapon classes later on
. There's a quick attack, a strong attack, a parry, a dodge, some limited aerial combat & about a dozen kinds of magic- most of which either aren't super fun or useful to use outside of specific boss fights. Despite the 30 some weapons you get in the game- there isn't much variation outside of aesthetics & the limited customization of weapons can be optimized without the players input. The different difficulties of the game also only seem to change the amount of health enemies have & damage they deal so consequently, the only reason to play on a difficulty higher than easy is to make the game longer. Not more rewarding or exciting. Players also have the ability to upgrade their weapons by talking to an NPC at a workshop & bringing him materials dropped from enemies or bought. There is literally no reason to do this. The drop rate for the items required is insanely low even if you have an item drop buff on so you end up going in & out of the same area for hours to respawn the enemies who drop the items you want. The pickup animations also last a lot longer than they probably should & can't be skipped, drawing the experience out even longer. Wash, rinse, repeat. By the end of my fourth playthrough (weapon upgrades carry over to NG+) I had upgraded 3 weapons to level 2. There's some limited platforming & decent boss fights. Taken as a whole the gameplay is kinda middling but passable if you're patient. That's okay though because the game itself isn't about the gameplay. The story for Nier Replicant starts off as just a brother who wants to cure his sister & has to travel all over the place to look for a cure. Very quickly in the story he finds that the disease itself- the Black Scrawl, is connected to a supposedly ancient prophcy and it expands from there to places I'm not going in a review to spare you the spoilers. I want to emphasize this as much as possible- the games story IS NOT COMPLETE if you only beat the game once. There are 5 possible endings, each with their own unique takes on who the main character is vs. who he understands himslelf to be & same goes for the enemies. The first ending leaves a lot to be desired precisely for this reason. Luckily, the game itself is short enough after the slow start and subsequent playthroughs start right around the middle-60% through the game so your later playthroughs are significantly shorter. This change is absolutely necessary for the beginning of your fist playthrough to have the dramatic effect that it has in the end. While many of the characters also seem to come from traditional anime archetypes, the later 4 playthroughs also expand on them a lot especially in the lite visual novels that intersperse the action-focused gameplay. Somewhere through my second playthrough I realized that while the characters are certainly their own individuals with their own respective quirks, adittudes & arcs the setting they find themselves in is also genuinely interesting & blows up into a sci-fi/fantasy Yoko Taro universe. There's plenty explained to those who want to do a bit of reading and plenty to speculate on for those who let the game linger on their minds- barring my only negative thing to say about the story... the amount of story-relevant content that isn't found in any of the Drakengard games at all. Fans of games that were produced outside of their country, especially places like Japan where many IP market models are so heavy on merch sales, are used to missing out on plushies, artbooks, t-shirts & the like from some of their favorite IPs. Lots of us aren't used to story-relevant content being totally inaccessible. Unfortunately that's the case for the Drakengard series as a whole; there are lite novels, comics & audio discs only available (1) in Japanese which wouldn't be the worst issue in the world if it weren't for the fact that they're (2) only available in Japan. Nowadays we have fan sites, subreddits & youtubers to translate for us which is awesome BUT I would've appreciated a deluxe edition or DLC with that stuff in it.

The game has beautiful soundtrack and graphics. The fighting is fun, and overall story is really good, though the process is VERY tedious and big chore at that, so if you got the patience it's a really good experience overall.

Play it once through ending A at least, if it tires you at route B drop it and watch the differences and endings like i did. This would've worked better as a different medium than a video game. An interesting premise with slog called "gameplay" on the side. I love the artistic vision, it does it so beautifully, both visually and musically. In that regard it's a masterpiece. But i want to have fun playing, which the repetitiveness (especially in side quests) and backtracking definitely wasn't providing. Also it has glaring performance issues even for a high end pc. What a shame, i looked forward to it so much after Automata.

This game started as a fun action game, but as I continued to play and got all the endings, it truly became something special.

insanely good story and soundtracks. gameplay is alright the side quest on the other hand is tedious, but some of em are actually really nice. the only part that annoyed me is the farming system cause why the hell is it based on real time?????? but anyways game is a solid PEAK and this actually tops automata for me personally. now i just gotta figure out how to get my hands on drakengard... "No one STOPS! it's way too late to STOP! No one....STOOOOOOPS!" ...pure cinema

Insane story, perfect ost's, fun combat and top tier character/monster designs. The weakest part of the game would be secondary fetch quests, but those are optional and really not needed (until ending C, some are mandatory then). And even then some of them end up being pretty cool. It's a masterpiece and one of the best game ever made.

I played Automata and this in the wrong order. I'd recommend starting here unless you really can't get over the repetitive parts as Automata spoils some of the story. The storytelling and characters pay off at the end, I loved all of them. Certain later parts of the game are some of the most magical moments in a video game. I never played the original NieR but the fluid combat here seems like an upgrade. It is very similar to Automata while maintaining some of its own identity. Some of the graphical choices and the music remaster is a bit more mixed but I don't think it really takes away from the experience, overall I think the upgrades here are good. Runs very well on the Steam Deck and is a great game to play on it.
