Bittersweet RPG-maker game that balances a dark and serious story with occasional light-hearted comedy very well. I'm not familiar with the gas attacks and cult activities that went on in Japan during the 90s, but like well written historical fiction, it got me more interested in the time and encouraged me to do my own research. Overall it is a solid medium length story that you can easily get lost in but it pulls everything back together at the end so it's fine. If you do play this game, make sure to backtrack a bit for some nice easter eggs as well.

Tales of the Black Forest is a stellar game. The characters are all done wonderfully, the art is amazing, the story, while having some parts that feel a little rough, is also great, and Japanese folklore is always generally amazing in media. I'd say there's only one inherently very obvious negative, and that is the English translation, and even then throughout the game I went from thinking of it as a negative to seeing it as added charm. The game is also rather short, but it's more than long enough for how cheap it is, especially when on sale.

Despite being a short game, the story is really deep and there are no boring moments. Good translation, atmosphere, pixel art. The characters are really diverse I've experienced slight performance issues in some scenes even with gaming specs, but it's nothing much. The game is worth the price. When it's on sale it feels like a steal

The story, characters, and atmosphere in this game make it one of the best I’ve ever played in its genre. I added it to my favorites because, while everything starts off confusing and you have no idea what to do, as the story unfolds, it all begins to make sense. The plot twists and the character development, especially their backgrounds, are what truly give this game its essence and melancholic tone. I wholeheartedly recommend it—whether you’re new to this type of game, a narrative game fan, or an achievement hunter. Speaking of achievements, it’s not a hard challenge, so you can unlock all of them in a single playthrough. Just be cautious with your manual saves and pay attention to the puzzles. Go play this gem—it’s honestly amazing.

This game definitely exceeded my expectations, I found it very pleasant! I like the detailed world-building with focus on Japanese mythology, the lore is quite intriguing. Moreover, the atmosphere is excellent and genuinely spooky at times. The gameplay is fairly simple mostly, allowing the story to be more extensive, which I enjoyed! The characters are entertaining and I was impressed by the complexity of their writing at times, I loved the backstories. In general, the plot is truly dark and sad, the combination of paranormal horror and realistic elements manages to create solid story depth! Additionally, the art and especially the soundtrack are amazing. Also there are adorable CATS!! Altogether, it's an engaging story-oriented experience, that offers more than it might seem at first.
