A game that gets a lot better after the fist couple of levels.
Its got quite a bit of a difficulty curve to it that I think might put some people off, I could'nt get past the first level on anything but the easiest difficulty using a controller. That almost made me put the game down but you should'nt - once you get into the controls of the game, its really good.
They really put the build engine to good use here, some of the levels are just top notch. The guns are quite cool as well.
Well worth the play, just stick through the first hour or two of awkardness and you will be plenty rewarded for it

this is my personal favorite build game. the game has a horror b-movie atmosphere and has immaculate gun-play. the visuals has held up pretty well, except maybe the weird voxels that don't really fit. blood is also really fucking hard what the fuck.

UPDATE: screw that, Blood FS is just a better game than Blood 2
I can't believe i always wished to play Blood since i was a kid and never got the chance, only to realize it's overall [strike]mediocre[/strike] great, especially when compared to its next installation.
Despite everything, is a solid [[strike]Boomer Soooter[/strike] 'classic FPS', with lots of fun, but requires an acquired taste.
Don't get me wrong, it looks great and it's generally way more fun than most acclaimed modern games.
The setting and atmosphere is awesome.
The very first chapter is what makes Blood great. The other chapters are somewhat either a hit or a miss.
Otherwise, there are quite a number of "features" that feels wrong (i'd say CHEAP) on the long run.
Gameplay wise:

the weapons are great and blowing up cultists with TNT, voodoo dolls, fireballs (and many more) feels great 👍

music is overall good, although some track contains disturbing children voices, and gets old real fast. 😰

some weapons are entirely situational (eg: the spray can) and can't be used on some enemies, due to resistances or just because they can't fit for the situation 👎

weapons wise, you'll mosttly use either the shotgun or the 'tommy gun', as they have the most common-found ammo 👎

many enemies have bad AI; the flying enemies will "spin" and fly like headless chickens; ranged humanoid enemies have hitscan weapons with insane accuracy 👎

save-scumming to avoid cheap fights is somewhat required even at "normal" difficulty 👎

lots of secrets to find, especially "super secrets" (usually iteam stashes) and 'secret levels' 👍

many secrets will require the player to use a guide, or be a real fat nerd.👎

secret-hunting is somewhat required to keep up with the bad default difficulty levels (more below) 👎

the standard difficulty choices are either "boring-easy" or "unfair and cheap": each difficulty level controls how much enemies will spawn, their health, their accuracy and lock-on time; the "average" difficulty already leans towards the 'really hard' only for the accuracy 👎

resorting to "custom" difficulty to address the bad game's difficulty sliders feel really cheap. 👎

the DLC's final boss ignores all your resistances, and will kill you with stomps doing insane AoE damage. 👎

a lot of game breaking bugs and inaccuracies not present in the original or even in the source ports. This is my first time playing the game but even I could tell something was wrong when I unlocked the voodoo doll and its autoaim just doesn't work. The inaccuracies are bad but the best weapon in the game being broken is just unacceptable. Now I'm just playing nblood through Steam

Bought the game first time a few years ago, refunded it because I thought "it was too hard". I had always loved the original, even when I was definitely way too young to play it in my father's fire department's office PC, many games I played back then (around 13 or so years ago) I was way too young to play (DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem 3D, Descent etc.). So when I saw the nightdive remake on sale once again, I bought it again, this time I enjoyed the game a lot more.
The game is definitely one of the more difficult Retro FPS games out there but now that I'm much older and much more used to difficult games, I enjoy Blood a lot more. My save is on the second highest difficulty. I may be save scumming my playthrough a lot, but I don't care, because I play how I want to play.
Fresh Supply has its issues and differences that many have already listed in youtube reviews, steam reviews and discussion posts as well. I care about some of these and have been able to fix a lot of them thanks to the available guides the community has made for others to use.
If you enjoy difficult FPS game and/or enjoyed the original Blood, get this, it's great. You can also play the DOSBox version of Blood with this copy as well. I'm one to first try getting all the achievements and then go for the mods and source ports, it's just easier for me to not think about missing some achievements that I'd otherwise be able to get on the Nightdive's version.

I'm not a fan of Duke Nukem 3D, but I have to admit: as the first fully fledged Build engine game, it deserves credit, which is usually addressed to other, more polished and simply better games made with it, like Blood, considered by many to be the best amongst these - we are talking about barely a dozen games though.
When it comes to old, obsolete games, people tend to (over)praise them, for the most part due to their 'level design'. Well, most of the time it's either nostalgia clouding our judgement or just plain prevarication. Let's take Doom for example - rather simple levels, but it's fine, the technical limitations were quite apparent and when they seemed complicated, it was because of the overuse of teleports. Blood on the other hand really excels in this regard - almost all the maps are exceptionally well crafted (save for a few boss-battle arenas), where we can open up secret passages by blowing up cracked walls, often leading back to the very beginning of the level. The Build engine can recognize height, place objects onto different elevations and move them, thus can create slopes and walls can be 'destroyed'. It's still not fully 3D however, as it is in Quake, with a little 'cheating' using sectors, it can even place rooms above each other. So some tend to call it 2.5D, while others 2.75D, since Doom was also labeled as 2.5D earlier.
There are also light puzzle elements (besides the genre-specific endless level-pulling and key-searching) like symbol-matching based on our currently possessed keys or following the instructions of a demonic voice.
I played it before, as a kid and was excited how the game would play now, after all those years and I have to admit - it's not as good as I remembered. That doesn't mean that it's not a good game, it just didn't quite stand the test of time and of course - I grew up and view things differently.
Warning: Blood is probably one of the most violent FPS games and disturbing content, including symbols, general themes, even some of the music. Our antihero is a psychopath who enjoys carnage and most of his witty comments don't exactly reflect the mood he should feel (his companions have been 'kidnapped').
This remaster - Blood™ Fresh Supply is probably not Nightdive's greatest: while it has welcome improvements, most notably the mouse look, the added official expansions, multiplayer support, many shortcomings from the original were left untouched.
According to the shallow (revenge) plot - most of the details aren't mentioned in the game itself, but in a text file - we play as a violent killer named Caleb in the early 1900s who is a high-ranking member of a demon-worshipping cult. As we can see in the opening cutscene, the cult leader - a demon - calls forth 4 of his most trusted servants and informs them that they have failed him. As one by one they are taken away by demonic beings, Caleb is pushed into a seemingly endless abyss. After regaining his senses and climbing out from a grave, he begins his journey to find his friends (?).
Despite the plain plot, the game has 2 redeeming factors: the fast-paced, fluid gameplay and its great atmosphere. We stumble upon a fair amount of references as well, (mostly) from horror-themed movies. In addition, certain maps were also named after these specific movies: like Crystal Lake or Charnel House, or the Overlook(ed haha) Hotel. That entire level is a homage to The Shining with the zombie emerging and the hedge maze.
We can do pretty much anything that's possible in an FPS: aim up and down, crouch, jump, have weapons with alternate fire modes... yet it's still not fully 3D and the monsters are all 2D sprites. We have access to a wide variety of power-ups and on higher difficulty levels these are essential: invulnerability, full invisibility, dual-gun wielding or one that can reflect enemy attacks (we still take explosion damage).
The introduction of different damage/armour types is a unique thing just like the storable, usable items - like the Boots of Jumping or Doctor's Bag, which we can start and stop using anytime we want, until they run out eventually.
Every single one of our weapons is usable, except for the latter ones such as the Life Leech or the Voodoo Doll (they were powerful before). The Sawed-Off is probably the most useful double-barreled shotgun we'll ever find in a videogame and the flare gun's ability to ignite enemies is unparalleled.
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3522927511
Although their exact number is relatively low, each of our enemies are memorable: the simple axe-wielding zombie, which can get back up, the hand from Addams Family, running on its fingertips (but how can it talk?) or the iconic cultist - screaming "maranax infirmux" whenever he spots us.
The game is amongst the hardest FPSs: the mentioned cultists have instantaneously hitting guns and at "Well Done" difficulty we can easily die when facing 3-4 at once in an open firefight, (their reaction time is 0, they immediately hit us) so throwing dynamite from behind corners is essential. Dynamite is also vital to blow up damaged walls, usually hiding secrets, sometimes even levels.
Levels continue from where they were left off previously, creating the illusion of continuity. Due to the episodic nature we lose everything after finishing an episode and have to start a new game (there's even credits rolling between them :/). The 4 episodes feel inconsistent though, as some of the levels don't seem to fit: for example Episode 2 takes us into snow-covered locations and in the final levels we venture underground to kill a giant spider.
The extra episode, Post Mortem offers levels which feel like leftovers, which weren't good enough for the main game. The new enemy types, green & blue cultists, fire-/acid-spitting flowers and miniature Calebs also feel lame. The last level with the 3 demons disguising themselves as cultists was a good surprise though.
The other one, Cryptic Passage can only be launched separately and while it has many new textures and really atmospheric levels, the final battle with the 2 giant cerberuses is cheap.
Fresh Supply
The widescreen- and mouse support while seem basic to be present, are the most vital improvements. The '4K' is obviously a joke due to pixelation, but the antialiasing (8x MSAA) + ambient occlusion can indeed improve the visuals.
There is surround sound, but it's all over the place, we can hear the sound of environmental objects (a torch for example) from all speakers when we are very close to them. CD music must be turned off in order to access the original soundtrack.
Collision detection has been fixed, before it was unforgiving: every door could crush us or fires burn us. Autoaim is on by default, which should be turned off. Enemies can often hover below or above us where we can't aim directly (they are 2D sprites) resulting in a nearly endless cat and mouse game, turning the game into a tedium underwater (and they never drown either, like we do - fall damage can kill them though). We can get stuck at certain ledges, where only reloading helps. Gargoyles and the fat zombie's ranged attack still can't hit us if we crouch.
The game also forcibly tries to adjust our view to the centre, whenever we are on slopes, which can be very annoying during combat.
Blood is an enjoyable FPS from before the fully 3D-era, but this remaster lacks some of the improvements BloodGDX offers.
PROS
+ mouse look, 2 expansions
+ excellent level design, destroyable environment
+ great weapons
+ co-op and deathmatch
+ surround sound...
CONS
- ...but it's strange
- many bugs remained
- useless FOV
- underwater combat is a mess
