After playing a few civ-like scifi games, I must say that this one's got my attention.
Pax Nova may have its own share of sins, so to speak - some bugs, a not-so-cohesive implementation of its many mechanics, some text errors - but it's still that little piece of sci-fi culture I can't quite set aside.
What does make me come back to it?
First, the lore. It is not so inovative, but it does merge many sci-fi concepts together with a touch of ellegance. The best part of it? The mash works! Here you'll find your federation-like humans, your theocracies, your inquisitorial 40k-esque warriors, your xenomorphs, and so on. Each race has its own factions, with fascinating philosophies and intertwining backstories which are sure to pitch nation against nation.
As for the center stage of war, it revolves around a refuge world - at first. Soon enough tech trees will lead the player towards the development of several types of spaceships, leading towards a space-exploration stage. Eventually, new worlds can be colonized, leading to a galactic empire sort of game. All maps have their own exploitable resources, as well as their list of enemies to struggle against. This is quite like the old "Emperor of the Fading Suns", a game set in a dune-like universe where you play both world maps and galactic conflicts. Only in here the AI's present...
Diplomacy's also an alternative. A very nice touch is that inter-racial diplo is only completely possible after the player researches the xeno's language within the tech tree. Speaking of it, the tree's fairly easy to figure out. It does have a nice amount of options, although I feel it could be a bit crunchier.
Maps are simple, being shaped within a large hexagon. I won't complain: to be fair, the fact that one can explore different biomes and erect cities all over the galaxy is more than enough to compensate the simplicity of it.
The systems are standard for a game like this - city upgrades, collectible resources, explorable ruins. Mobs can get pretty aggressive - in fact, the last few updates have made them quite bloodthirsty (which I love, by the way). You can also build new units all around - more options here would be nice, but it is already entirely fun to do so (still gotta get better designs for my Paladins in my Templar Conquest run).
Now, if you stayed with me this far, you might be thinking that there's nothing so noteworthy about the elements I (barely) described. And that is the point: Pax Nova tries to bring together many regular tropes for the sci-fi strategy genre, and when they clash there's something special and liberating about it.
In other words, I guess I keep sliding back to Pax Nova mainly because it is the only game out there that actually makes me feel like I'm living within Arrakis, or Darkover, or Winter (from The Left Hand of Darkness). Every time I boot this thing up I feel just as if I was about to enter worlds forsaken, standing tall above feudal societies and broken factions of forgotten empires, only to be pitched against the many survivors, rebels and zealots that emerge from the depths between the stars...
Do I even have to say it? Suck up to the flaws... Cause the good things in here are REALLY GOOD!
Oh... And support the dev. Dedication's his game.
