One hell of game, a definitive high point for the franchise. Obviously there are other classic great games like Rome 1 or Medieval 2, but you can't go wrong with Shogun 2, if you are looking for a more modernized experience (even if it's not that young anymore). Fall of the Samurai took lessons from Empire and Napoleon and gave a very satisfying XIX century warfare experience, though mixed with traditional samurai units. You can actually play full traditional and reenact Last Samurai scenes (hopefully with better results!).
Game is fast, loose and aggressive, very microintensive if you like cavalry spam of Takeda, as spear units will shred them. There is clear rock, paper, scissors format going on and impressive depth of combat, which help to keep things fresh, when everyone is more or less running with the same roster - it's a civil war after all. Yari Ashigaru are great against anything, but swords beat spears. Spears beat cavalry. Arrows shred units in general, but especially unarmored. Gun units reload slowly and can't fire in arc, but proper handling from hill, city defence or pike & shot will give great results. Cavalry has lots of utility when controlled well.
Art style, soundtrack and presentation aged well and look quite fresh even now. There are great bangers to listen to and the whole ukiyo-e aesthetic is gorgeous.
Game might be somewhat difficult to get into, as usual for some strategic games, maybe a couple of tips:
- if you don't disable Realm Divide by a mod, then stay on a certain number of provinces, develop them, tech (start mostly from Chi tree for economy, 3 techs from Chi, 3 from Busido then go more into Chi, though it depends on clan too) and raise armies. You have plenty of time and when RD hits, everyone will start hating you and war declarations will follow.
- Yari Ashigaru are king and they will stay in your roster for a long time as they always get some utility. Especially if you are Oda or Ikko. You will slowly phase some of them out for samurai units and that's ok.
- Shogun 2 artillery is not that overpowered as it looks, now Fall of the Samurai is a different story - be sure to get them, Parrot Guns are strong enough, you don't have to wait for Armstrong Guns, though be sure to develop them as well and recruit for future armies. It will take time, FOTS is a slower paced game than vanilla.
- Agents are great addition if you can level them up, it will be more difficult for Legendary or if you dislike save scumming, though. Metsuke will mostly stick to cities and boosting their income, fighting ninjas and maybe bribing if you go Tokugawa. Ninjas are used for scouting, obviously assassinations and protection of your generals. Easy to level them through building sabotage. Priests are great for public order, converting and causing rebellions. Ikko and catholic priests are nuts, get them.
