After 3 years from my 1st encounter with School Wars (now renamed as Kraken Academy) it is something that: "No one asked, but everybody needed" game xD
If you're fan of Life is Strange, Kindergarten or playing as Tracer in Overwatch - you should buy a uniform of the Kraken Academy Club.
But lets get back to basics, shall we?
Controls are simple and I could say "packed up" around the WASD keys radius.
Character movements are sharp when you're not hitting anything. Freezing MC from movement while "batting" the shit out of trash bins is a bit annoying. The "magnet" radius to collect items is too small, so you have to e.g. stick to bigger trash containers to catch all collectibles.
The final boss battle does not feel very challenging and is too repetitive imho.
What about the story?
It's creative to say at least. 4 parts that made a story whole. I couldn't predict in which way it turns out in the end. I can just say that it was very interesting. I will cut it here, to not spoil you the funny parts.
Well, it's true that I don't get all the comedy puns since they're dedicated for english natives xD But I do knew some movie ones and exaggerated NPC styles. Oh, NPC's are made with idea for most of them. Almost all encountered characters are unique in their way. They have individual quests for you which depends on the time and day as well.
So to be precise it's most likely Kindegarten-style storytelling with Armageddon and timetravel from Life is Strange combined together into Visual Novel story, provided by no one else but damn Cthulhu from the lake XD
With this animated intro that launches ever time you get into game, you feel like coming back to the next episode of your favourite anime. And trust me, you will have 2 seasons from this content.
What about the activities?
You can focus on the story, but I'm more like grinder person in single-player games. And I can say it's too much places to grind... or to rephrase it: Too much trash bins in one place.
After upgrading my recycle refund abilities I could buy almost everything that was to buy and I even got a change left.
What's more, there is not very much to do while youre not doing side-quests or main ones.
The map is big, but places that could be used for secrets/ easter-eggs are mostly filled with bins we need to grind as I mentioned before. And don't get me wrong here, it's not like Ubisoft's maps, but I felt letdown when I look around a corner in some secret as hell place on map and find nothing...
Oh and accessibility to previous encountered "secret" locations (even if we have items required) is not posiible if you do not have a quest initiated, which can be frustrating to get all possible items and achievments.
Who you recommend it to?
As I said, to the people who are familiar with Kindergarten game mostly, cause you will catch the mechanics pretty quickly. And to casual ones who likes this artstyle combined with pixel-art graphics.
The puzzles are not very hard and I didn't need to check Tutorials to move on with the story. But don't worry if you stuck somewhere, cause you can check dedicated Kraken Academy discord server, where community will help you out.
After 7h (two days of casual gaming) I did 60% of achievments and completed the story on normal mode and hard mode. (Hard mode is avaible for specific quests and is optional. Just to collect achievment)
I will definitely do another attempt to complete this game in full.
I will wait for another chapter of Kraken Academy's troubles in the future.
