A moody, but repetitive, spin on the Diablo II formula
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr is basically Diablo II in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and you are familiar with both you'll know exactly what to expect. Although the game tries its best to present what you are doing as traveling the galaxy as you gather clues and investigate heresy, make no doubt about it -- just as in Diablo II and its many clones, you'll choose one of several classes and run around randomly generated levels slaying hundreds upon hundreds of enemies, leveling up, learning new abilities, and gaining ever more powerful equipment. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, and an expertly designed Diablo II clone can be very satisfying indeed. In this regard, Inquisitor leaves a great first impression. Each class is quite unique with class-specific resources and mechanics, such as the Sororitas class and her Faith resource. The game slowly introduces several interesting mechanics and systems, such as equipment crafting and upgrading, and randomly-generated optional mission chains you can complete for powerful items. However, the first impression does not last long, and the biggest issue with the game is that character building after you've chosen your class is surprisingly basic. Your abilities are largely determined by whatever weapon you choose, so you cannot fundamentally change your build without switching to another weapon. Unable to mix and match your own personal set of abilities, all that's left for you is to choose passive bonuses (for example, additional health or ranged damage). This means that, while it's a decent game with tons of optional stuff to play with, the lack of interesting character building choices means that it's extremely shallow, at least if you are playing on the default difficulty level with the goal of simply finishing the game. There is certainly an argument to be made that modern Diablo II clones are designed to really only get interesting once you've cleared the game and start getting into all the optional postgame/endgame content... but it would have been nice if Inquisitor was designed to be challenging and interesting even your first time through. That just leaves you with the atmosphere and story, and while the game looks great and is very moody, the writing leaves a lot to be desired. It feels like the writers couldn't decide whether to take the setting seriously or make fun of it, so the dialogue swings wildly between the grimdark edgy stuff you'd expect from the setting, and sarcastic jokes. The game also constantly bombards you with dialogue during missions, and hardly any of it is worth reading or listening to. Having said all that, it's still worth a playthrough for any fan of the genre or setting, as long as you keep your expectations in check.
