Let me start by saying: DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION OF THE GAME. It is an insult to the original game and the franchise, and I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing it.
As a new user (1st month with the Steam Deck), this is a very bad start from Valve. I had such high expectations for this remaster that I'm now terribly disappointed to the point where I had to write this review.
"Half-Life: Source" is a frustrating and unnecessary mess. Although it is advertised as an improved version using the Source engine, it fails to provide any notable upgrades and instead introduces a huge variety of issues, to the point where the game is unplayable without cheats (so sad).
To start, the visual improvements are minimal at best. The retextured weapons are less appealing than in the original, and the claimed graphical enhancements are barely perceptible, but that is the minor issue. The game is full of bugs and performance problems, making it less stable and enjoyable than the initial GoldSrc version.
The audio, although presented as HQ, is unbalanced. You can barely hear the voices of the NPCs, while some effects are so loud that your ears will bleed. I played a good 80% without music because "the game couldn’t find it in the repository" (whatever that means).
For a title meant to showcase the Source engine's capabilities, it falls short in nearly every regard.
Additionally, the game poorly implements the Source engine's features. The physics feel misplaced and often lead to awkward and unrealistic interactions, diminishing the immersive experience that the original "Half-Life" delivered. I literally spent more time trying to climb ladders than fighting enemies, and I had to modify the walking speed in the game files to have an acceptable experience.
The AI behavior is erratic and sometimes completely broken, leading to a frustrating gameplay experience. During chapter 14, I had to use the "no clip" cheat to walk through a door at the end of the level because the NPC refused to open it.
The game crashed randomly, and I had a huge graphical glitch at the "Residue Processing" level, making the game totally unplayable to the point where I had to restart the console. It's so disappointing that Valve has not provided adequate support for their own remaster. This game wasn’t released yesterday, and it should be a celebration of the original game (which is 1000 times better, by the way).
In summary, "Half-Life: Source" offers zero improvements over the original game. It actually ruined the good childhood memories I had of it. It is riddled with technical issues that make it a very poor experience. If you want to revisit the "Half-Life" adventure, stick to the original, which provides a far more enjoyable experience in every way.
As a first experience on Steam Deck, it was really disappointing.
