To this day, Thief has everything it takes to stand out in the stealth genre: the level design is complex and intriguing, the tools available are simple but inspire creativity, and the story, while not particularly deep, has some nice twists. Stephen Russell in particular breathes life into Garrett's character, making him iconic from the very first chapter. Graphically, the game has some limitations, with its angular models, but I personally don't find this annoying; in a way, these limitations reinforce the oppressive and gothic atmosphere of the setting. Compared to Thief 2, the connotation of "steampunk" is inappropriate here: the use of technology is more limited, the artefacts are unreliable, the supernatural is more present: all this reinforces the horror atmosphere much more than in the later chapters. These are elements that make me appreciate it more than the second chapter, despite the fact that the latter refined the stealth formula proposed here. In this respect, the game is more daring in some levels, such as The Bonehoard, and varies the formula of sneaking around without being seen. Some find this annoying: Personally, I find these experiments enjoyable, although in at least one case they produced one of the most atrocious levels I have ever played (The Mage Towers). The pacing of some levels can be off, especially when played at expert level: in this case, you will be forced to scour the level maniacally several times in order to reach the necessary treasure quota to complete the quest. Nevertheless, it is advisable to try to play on the highest difficulty level. The level of vigilance and observation of the guards does not change, but you will be forced to visit areas that are normally ignored and dare more. With all its little flaws - many of which are fixed by the TFix patch , which is a must - it turns out to be a deep and fun game. Twenty-five years after the game's release, the community is still dedicated to producing fan content that could easily be mistaken for official expansions. The Black Parade turns out to be one of the most recent and acclaimed campaigns, but The Thief Guild has missions for all tastes.
