Very dissapointed with this one. I thought the remake would at least retain some of the original game's spirit, but it's just a poor twisting and milking of the concepts. The game doesn't compromise itself with the same artistic intent and vague narrative the original Yume Nikki has. Madotsuki's sprite feels bulky and obtuse, lacks the simplicity and personality of the bit-made Madotsuki. Doesn't even have the iconic closed eyes. Also, It's physique, while seemingly contradicting between artstyle and game, stablishes a much clearer age for her, making her not relatable throughout all age groups. Her animations are really clunky and not that well made, she stumbles in the air if you fall from certain heights so the animation is always fixed and doesn't react to the floor or terrain. Charging with the knife also kills your momentum and will make you fall into lots of pits if you use it to walk faster. Madotsuki's walk animation is painfully slow and you can't change that at all, the bycicle simply isn't in the game so everything feels really slow and draining. Those are the basic movements, but it gets worse. The game doesn't encourage exploration, it rewards you for following a set path without clear guidance. The original had some really good challenges were the effects really feel like progression to reach new areas, this one just plain and simple tells you to use something or relies on random solutions. The characters are butchered from a narrative perspective, they all fill some topical horror archetypes without much development. The game overs the game has are really slow and take away from the experience of finding out what Toriningen could do, the game over sound is loud and annoying and the fact you have to return to title screen is surreal to me. How is it possible they didn't even think about pinching your cheek? Real bad decision there, you don't even have Medamaude anymore. Anyways, a waste of time overall, I'm just completing it for the sake of completion, but Yume Nikki is and always be much more than this.
