YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- Reviews

As long as I have dreams in my heart, I can never escape. I can never awaken from my dreams. Maybe if I follow the dream just past this doorway, then someday I can wake up again...

I really found this game really entertaining. Tho.. I highly recommend to play while considering this as something that's not canon and just as a WHOLE NEW THING from the original game. The game also looks incomplete and full of potential wasted but it's still enjoyable
Did the other reviewers play this game?
I'm really surprised most these reviews are positive now, kind of makes me wonder how many of them are from people who played the original yume nikki and how many aren't. Right off the bat, I'll get my praises out the way, I appreciate the new nasu minigame, although the original was pretty broken anyway, I think it's a bit annoying to get the achievement for it, but it's fine. (This next paragraph contains spoilers for an easter egg which may pleasantly surprise you, you've been warned) I didn't enjoy
ao oni
when I played it personally, but when I saw the couple easter eggs for it in this game I thought it was pretty charming and fun, not to mention
the minigame they added for it
, that was kind of above and beyond what they had to do. This game does have some great moments, and the music, while most of it just iterates on the original yume nikki, does have a few stand outs, I don't think there's any tracks that feel like they detract from the game, even for the worst of them, and the song in the school for example, I believe that was an original and it's probably one of the best in this game.
And now for the bad...
This game is trying to be linear, and non-linear, and kind of fails, a pseudo-linear game CAN be great, but here it just felt kind of irritating at times, having to find effects for levels is just awful, and the most useful effect is by far one of the most obtuse to obtain, the umbrella, I won't spoil it, but genuinely what were they thinking? I tried to traverse block world for so long without the umbrella, with the most awful handling, and longest respawn times, which don't even spawn you back where you were. The school section, I couldn't even get in there because I had no umbrella, so I was just getting screamed at wondering what I'm supposed to do, seeing if I can go back, and I'm just stuck and have to wake up, which brings me to the slow and unskippable cutscenes and animations: The pink sea balloons, why the hell do I have to watch myself being pulled along on a balloon every time? Why so slowly? Why can I literally fly into the water and respawn back at the balloon only to have to watch the incredibly long cutscene again? Why do I have to watch Monoko walk away every time with the stupidest least atmospheric walk animation known to man? And her walking away doesn't even seem to dictate where she shows up next, so clearly it's not to help you find her, it would've been better if there was a brief black fade out and in, and oh my god the fade outs and fade ins. What, were, they, THINKING? Why every time I press W do I have to wait like 2 or 3 seconds for the fade out and fade in to put the hat and scarf on? I'd be fine with the model just immediately changing, no fade out, I'd be fine with a brief fade out and fade in, but no, every single time, accidentally put the hat and scarf on? Oops let me take that off, only about 5 seconds of my life spent staring at a screen and waiting, every, single, time, that might sound minor, but it adds up, and for people who are used to WASD, it's gonna happen a lot I'd bet. Why do I need to watch her go up this ladder slow as hell every single time? Even when I just accidentally press E? And why the hell are the henkei shita an enemy? Bro was chill af in the original, tbh in the original they might've just been corpses considering they never moved and seemed to be decapitated. And why are the animations so slow? The mannequins were irritating more on my second and third goes around because she's just so slow at pulling out her lantern, and can't just hold onto it while she jumps or glides, is she stupid? And she won't even hold it while doing the lever either, it's an insane oversight to have all of these animations you're likely to use a fair bit take so long, the feel matters more here. And while we're on the subject of slow, careful not to fall in a few certain patches of water, or you'll be unable to jump out for not really any reason, and will be forced to walk at a snails pace all the way through to land, did people even play this game before it released? IT'S BEEN UPDATED? AND THEY FIXED NONE OF THIS?
But the story:
WHY THE ACTUAL FUCK WOULD YOU EVER EVER CANNONISE THE
SEXUAL ASSAULT
THEORY Who thought that was a good idea? Who thought stripping every ounce of nuance of the original was a good idea? Just spelling out "yeah uh, this thing happened to her", IT'S SO BLATANT TOO, Poniko's room, the heavy breathing, Uboa's trap, kyuukyuu's rubbing getting so much more faster and deliberate, AS
MONOE
IS CRYING, AND LOOKING AT YOU? THE DAMN ACHIEVEMENT NAME, BRO. And something else, why is she a kid? Why are they kids? They're like late middleschool early teens if I had to guess, why are they kids in this one? I always interpreted Madotsuki as like college age, but what I appreciate is how in the original, it's all very subjective, you can interpret things to be completely opposite to someone else, here there's no middleground, it's very "this is it, and this is how it is, there you go". I recognise this game is trying to do something different to the original, but my main issue is that it doesn't do it well, if you stripped away the yume nikki title, changed some of the models or environments to not be directly referencing yume nikki, this game would be forgotten, it'd be an inside clone with a decent premise that completely fumbles it. I adore yume nikki, I play fan games of it all the time, honestly from what I heard about this game I expected something bad the moment I pressed play, and it was worse than I expected, I still 100%ed it, I'm still gonna get all the badges for it, because the actual free yume nikki on here has neither (although YNO has badges, YNO is the best way to play yume nikki, not steam), I'll gladly take more yume nikki content, I just wish it was good content, I mean I read the manga, no one liked that, but it had great art and a distinct style despite the "story" being abysmal. Oh and something I forgot to mention, for many resolutions, the pixel scaling particularly for minigames is just abysmal, I'd rather the screen fit itself to suit the resolution with the pixels being perfect than all messed up, I mean the original yume nikki was a pixel game and you can't even get the pixels right? It's just such an odd thing to get so wrong here. Anyway, I'm not really sure how to end this review off, if you liked yume nikki, if you want more, if you need more official YN content in your life, sure, get this (on sale), but otherwise I'd say you can skip this, watch a playthrough if you really want to know what the game has in store, even if you don't wanna play it, if you just wanna show there's interest and support behind the yume nikki title from the fans, go ahead, buy this, although merch may be more fulfilling. Ultimately, this isn't a work from Kikiyama's mind, it's a work inspired by Kikiyama's work, the same as the manga, if you're interested in seeing a painting of a painting of a painting, I guess take a look, there are some great moments, and decent additions, despite all my criticisms of the game, but set your expectations even lower than they were, because mine were low from the start. Oh and friendly reminder, yume nikki means dream diary in Japanese, this game is called "DREAMDIARY -DREAM DIARY-", maybe if this game had a different subtitle, attempting to create a more defined identity separate from the original game, it would've been received better by the players it was meant for.
