While the game has its set of problems, when you "get into it", you end up loving it.
Romancing Saga Minstrel Song is not the hardest Saga game out there (RS2 and Scarlet Grace were way harder), the game can kick your ass if you're not careful. This is a game that hard core JRPG fans will love a lot.
Story.
The lore of the game is fantastic, you have a set of nations with a very tense relationship between each other, behind the scenes there are dark forces who support the dark god SARUIN, while the other 4 gods are ruling in their own way.
You play as one of the MCs of the game and experience each town's problem and storyline (which relates to political struggles with other countries) and you build a relationship with the people and kingdoms through quests.
The story is basic, but has some very great moments, the ending is pure joy and there is a sense of mistery in the game and the locations.
Characters.
There are a LOOOOOOOOOOOT of great characters in the game, from a cool Bard that sings for you and helps you to a weird asf Doctor who turns people into zombies, there are a lot of great personalities inside this world.
Our main characters own storyline is very barebones, once you experience your first few hours of personal quest, you get thrown into the world to find your place and do whatever you want.
You can recruit a lot of different characters, you don't even know if they're good or bad (tip, the ones that have the highest BP regen, are the best) at the start, I just picked whatever looked cool and went with it.
Music.
Saga games usually have FANTASTIC MUSIC, and this game is no exception. Not much to say other than your ears will be blessed.
Battles.
This is the meat of the game, while people recomend not engaging into battle, its VASTLY overrated how strong the enemies become, as long as you always keep investing into strong defensive equipments, you be fine.
You can change formations, buy and equip classes, equip different SETS of weapons, different armors, and accesories, all seem normal, but they have a big effect.
Formations can often help trigger powerful combination attacks which deals a lot of damange, the place you put your characters in is important, front row will deal a lot of damange and you be fast, but you be targeted a lot, which can be a good thing if you equip a shield and put your weapon into defense mode (your weapons can have three modes), will make your character deflect attacks.
The classes, are very misterious into what they do, I just picked whatever aligned to the weapon of my character and went with it. It was mid game that I found out about Rosalian Mage being OP and it saved my ass so many times. You often need to check internet to see what each class do, but most of them are very unique in their effects.
There are a lot of weapons, but I personally prefered the FOIL the best, it lets you equip shields, it has a terrific AOE, and powerful 1 hit attacks. I only played with Spears, Great Swords and One Hand Axes, I prefer the Foil. Something to consider, is that the LONG SWORD and SHORT SWORD gets a lot of great weapons.
The Magic is also amazing, there are some like Ilusions that seems meh, but stuff like Earth and Water are incredible on every character because of CC and Heals (Water Blast is very powerful), then you have Mind Blast which deals AOE damage and Fire Magic which has some unique and very useful spells which saved me vs the final boss.
Conclusion
I spend 30 hours on my first playthrough and they were so much fun! It was nice not knowing where the fuck to go and anywhere I choose, there was something new to do and some weird events happening so randomly, the whole idea of having a world evolving as you do quests and every small decision impacting future events, makes for an exciting experience!
The game is highly replayable, but I won't replay this game for now since my backlog is too big. But I will play as Jamil next, a Thief as MC looks fun.
