FULL RELEASE BABEEEY!
Which I took as the opportunity to finally write a review. Old Wolf Quest was great when I was a teen and I was ecstatic when I found out WQ AE existed a few years ago. Its the same nostalgic game I love but SO MUCH more in depth!
As it says on the tin, you play a Wolf in Yellowstone (or in the fictional setting Lost River, which is my personal favourite DLC) and you get met with a dynamic, beautiful world full of other animals with realistic behaviours: Bucks duke it out over Does, Does protect their calves if you (or another predator) gets too close, Coyotes and Eagles hunt Hares, Beavers walk their trails, you feel like you are just one animal of many trying to survive. One of my favourite are foxes and their adorable little mouse-hunting jumps. One of my least favourites are the bears, but this also speaks to the games quality, as a real life wolf will also find their carcasses stolen by opportunistic bears and themselves chased if they stray too close.
Your wolf can stay a lone dispersal, but the normal direction of a dispersal wolfs life is founding or joining a pack, where you then continue to raise litters of (adorable!) pups from wobbly potatoes to full adult packmates, finding them food, protecting them and teaching them to survive. Your previous years pups stay around and help with their baby siblings, but at some point they also strike out on their own to have their own pups. Wolves have a personality system (Social - Loner; Lazy - Energetic and Cautious - Bold), so every packmember is an individual and you grow to love them as such, making goodbyes both happy and bittersweet.
Realism is paramount for Wolf Quest and I really love that, the game is great at tugging you into the perspective of a wolf in an intuitive way. If your pups are hungry, you might take more risks when you finally come across prey - but might also pay the price if you get injured doing that and hunting becomes even harder. If your pack is big, hunting Cow Moose starts being reasonable because of the amount of food you go through, while it would be an unnecessary risk for a pack that could make do with an Elk cow. But my favourite intuitive behaviour happened in Hellroaring Mountain, which has an area outside of Yellowstone - iE hunting is legal in fall.
I entered that area accidentally, got jump scared with a sudden bang and booked it south. Ever since Im cagey in that area (even if human me knows there are only certain times of year hunters are active). If thats not a natural reaction of an animal that barely survived a scary situation I dont know what is.
This game doesnt demonize wolves, but it also doesnt shy away from the more brutal parts of wolf life - you NEED to hunt to survive. Hunting calves is easier than going for adult animals. Conflicts with other wolves happen and maybe it makes sense to kill some of them.
Those nuances are important for an animal thats not harmless but is unfairly presented as an indescriminate killing machine in some media. Understanding and Empathy allows a rational reaction to these wild animals. Education like this was the initial reason for Wolf Quests existence and even with all the better animations, more species, persistent wolf packs and better graphics quality THIS is still the core of the game.
And while this could be enough for an educational game, it is also just plain fun to run with the pack, or start a chaotic play session that has everyone bouncing or just sniff around for what interesting sights await you.
10/10 I am so glad this gem of my childhood is still around and has gotten even better. Its both educational and fun and (sadly rare nowadays) doesnt contain a bunch of dark patterns to squeeze more money from fans. DLCs exist and support the continued developement, but they didnt cut integral mechanics to sell them back to the player in parts. DLCs are either different Maps (Hellroaring Mountain or the aforementioned Lost River) or purely cosmetical, but not having them doesnt impact the game negatively.
That being said IMO the DLCs are worth it to support this amazing game further.
