Chronicle of Innsmouth is and point-and-click adventure game based on H.P. Lovecraft’s “Shadows over Innsmouth”. So, if you know this book, you know the story – which is not a bad thing, the developers managed to follow the original rather well. For those that are not familiar with this story from the Cthulhu Mythos a very short synopses not to spoil the plot: You play as a young man, who - because he is coming of age - tours New England around 1920. When looking for a cheaper way to travel to the city of Arkham, you stumble across the fact that there is a small town called Innsmouth you never heard of and that seems to be shunned by the people who know about it and also very secluded from the world. So, you become interested and decide to pay it a visit since it is on your way anyhow… turns out to be not the best decision. As said above the developers stayed very close to the original story and put quite a lot exposition in. This means the game over all is rather dark in its tone and has several horror moments. However, since they clearly were inspired by the LucasArt games of the 90s and pay homage to them several times, there are several jokes/references and light hearted moments which I quite liked. The developers also decided on the “classical” point-and-click adventure control with several verbs to select and try. Which is a little bit complicated and annoying. The puzzles overall are logical and nice, there were only very few where it was not clear what to do or where you needed to pixel hunt. But as so often there are frustrating moments, where you only can do something at certain point in the story, meaning that if you figure it out beforehand the character will not do it (but at least acknowledge that it is a good idea). They also mixed things up with the escape sequence at the end. The ideas and the mechanisms are quite nice BUT the scene in the hotel room where you have to get away in time was one of the most frustrating sequences, I ever had to master in an adventure game. Also, you can die in this game. Actually, quite a lot. But since the game autosaves always before this can happen the consequences are nearly nonexistent. All in all, if you like classic point-and-click adventure games and/or H.P. Lovecraft this game is for you. I am not fully sure if it is worth the full price so maybe wait for at least a small dissociating – but you definably should give it a chance. Cthulhu ftaghn!
