I hate turn based combat but thought everything else the game had to offer sounded right up my alley and gave it a try anyways.
I managed to force myself to finish the game and can confidently say its a jack of all trades, master of none type of game that has loads of different things on offer but none of them are really worth your time.
Here is my analysis of most of its content:
Combat is objectively bad for 3 reasons.
1. You cant put statuseffects into your game just to make all of the bosses completely immune to all of them. I just didnt bother with ailments because of that. I get it wouldve made the bosses to easy, but its just incompetent design and nothing else. There is no way im getting used to a crutch just for you to take it away in bossfights.
2. Combat has RNG so bad it decided multiple of my bossfights. Sometimes i'd have insane wins i didnt deserve and sometimes really unlucky deaths. Neither felt fair or rewarding. RNG is also part of almost every system in combat its insane. Crits and missed attacks are fine to an extent but not if it constantly decides who wins and who loses.
3. The game has a rock paper scissors type weaknes system that actually works quiet well. That said you dont know weaknesses until you tried an attack.. long story short on higher difficulty youre going to die just to find out the enemies weaknesses just to win the second attempt.. Not a big deal in trash fights but very important in boss fights. This system actually wastes nothing but time, so i just opened a page on my second monitor that had all weaknesses listed and went with that for 90% of the game.
Tartarus is WAAAAAY to long. after 144 floors i looked up how many floors i had left to climb and just downloaded a trainer to one shot everything. no regrets. I have killed all 12 shadows fair and square on merciless and couldnt do more after that. just no.
Music is as good as everyone says but i feel like i was listening to the same few combat songs in my first and my last hours of gameplay and that was just annoying.
Game looks good enough. Seen waaay better looking anime games on the same engine but it gets the job done.. Most of the personas just look goofy though. Also, since you fight thousands of shadows youre going to fight the same models just recolors of them from the starts to the end of the game. really disliked that. I get why but i never wanted to fight this much to begin with so thats just self inflicted and idc that its a remake.
Story is clearly just background for the friendships. The game also has a power of friendship type ending that while not necessarily bad was just really silly and uncalled for. Not out of nowhere but silly non the less.
Really aint worth talking about and if youre hoping for a good story.. dont try. It also takes a long time to really start which had me very frustrated early on.
Friendships can be seperated into main cast and everyone else.
Main cast was mostly well flashed out but only female characters got social links.
Social links are friendships that offer 10 hangouts per person.
Every female one can end in a romance and you can romance all of them at the same time no consequences.
The main cast ones felt better cause you knew the characters from the rest of the game but the romances even with those still felt stupid. Every character no matter their gender just makes you out to be this dependable god when you barely say 20 words throughout all of their friendship. its just silly and really shows in the romances where you just cant help but wonder how they could love this empty shell of a character..
Outside of that the social links are either of two things: 1. someone needs a shoulder to cry on or 2. someone that does really stupid things and because the game rewards you for telling them what they want to hear you end up egging them on to do more bad things until they land on their face and cry on your shoulder anyway.
I admit its a bit more than that, but really just a little.. I had high hopes for this but they felt extremely shallow and short. The important males get a couple of extra quest type hangouts that were neat but they had a pp so nothing much.. Waste of your time if youre looking for good friend ship type storys.
I love how you play about a full year of your characters live. its pretty neat partaking in japanese culture. school events and even the exams.
When i bought the game i thought it would be fully voiced. My bad i admit, but i found out its not..
After 10 or so hours i got tired of reading text i realized id forget anyway cause everything important was voiced and so i skipped EVERYTHING that wasnt voiced.
I think i didnt miss anything so feel free to do the same. That said, answers for exams and some other details were in text dialogue so expect to look up the answers online if you still want to get it right. Worked for me.
All in all a very underwhelming game. Wouldve been fine if tartarus hadnt been that long at maybe 50hrs or so but not acceptable like this. I had planned to play 4 and 5 after this and forced myself through this but im going to pass.
I thought its going to be a grind with loads of nice friendship storys inbetween but thoses story were letdowns for the most part so the game had literally nothing to offer for me. Shame. I genuinely regret having touched this series.
