Continuing the Journey Through the Metal Gear Series
Well, it's time to move from 2D Metal Gear games to the first 3D one. What could I say — Kojima-san created something truly extraordinary given its release year of 1998. For a game from the past millennium, this one maintains the highest standard in story and characters. Even now, there are plenty of interesting ideas: nanomachines, clones, genetic engineering, psychic abilities, etc. And, of course, constant fourth-wall breaking, which is not annoying at all and only brings more value to the dialogues or even boss fights.
The cutscenes and dialogue sessions are quite long, but they are extremely engaging. All the characters are interesting, unique, and seamlessly integrated into the main plot. Solid Snake, our famous main character, grows alongside the game's story, revealing new sides of his personality.
As for the ending of the story, it explores profound themes and even has two variations, with and without our new lover from the battlefield. Both endings provide a decent conclusion to the story, though I still prefer the one with the girl, even if you have to mash the button like crazy for that (those who know, know).
I'll be short regarding the gameplay: all the mechanics and gadgets are cohesive and tightly coupled with the story and the environment, which makes everything feel more immersive. Many devices can be used for multiple purposes, introducing a playground to find a way to complete certain rooms or bosses.
About some negative points: the game still features some backtracking (though not as much as the previous two 2D chapters). It is still annoying, as all backtracking is, but not so much that it makes you throw your gamepad at the wall. On top of that, Kojima and the team clearly reused some ideas from Metal Gear 2, once again featuring the memory alloy key puzzle, delaying the boss fight to gather the required weapon, HIND-of-course,
a barehanded boss fight
, and the structure of the map: three buildings and THE lifts.
I tried the VR missions as well. They were somewhat useful, but jeez, there are too many of them. Not everyone will commit to completing hundreds of them just for the satisfaction of a shiny achievement.
One small additional point: the game doesn't explain the L1-R1 menu, so I was forced either to click all the buttons to find anything or go to Reddit or elsewhere for help. Judging by Reddit forums, I wasn't the only one with this problem.
Conclusion
Given that the game is obviously quite old, I’ll still recommend it with all my heart if you have the courage for retro gaming (better in this regard than Metal Gear 1 and 2, but still not for everyone). If you don’t have anything against old-but-gold classics, you have to complete it.
HLTB: 13-14 hours.
