A small cozy game with great design, ideas and ambition, which fell flat on reaching its full potential. Which always makes me utterly sad, knowing the game could have been even greater with a bit more time and care!
Positive:
- Great Design
- Interesting Story
- Lovable Characters
- Enjoyable Ending
Negative:
- No Incentive to complete the library & memory lane storywise
- Rushed Creation of the "2nd phase" Dungeons and everything from winter town on forward
- Introduced Areas stays unused for the story (probably because of cut content)
- Music instrument stays basically useless for the story (again cut content?)
In Between:
- Dungeons
(there is a concept behind of them and the summer one has a special speed strat to end him, but that is the only creative boss fight with strats... same dungeon layout again and again, and the "just beat the enemy until its dead" is not pleasant when the daily tasks are making you do the dungeons a bunch of times on repeat!)
- Repairing the environment
(it was a nice touch of staying equipped on those repair kits, but seeing those areas we couldn't fix up... made it overall being lackluster and felt like a shallow facade!)
- Daily Tasks
(they have no impact, only use is for enabling weapon updates and at the beginning difficult to complete, when you can't make it, then you'll be shamed for not doing them even though they told you that it's okay if you don't do it... anxiety and stress level to the max!!!)
These are just a few things I noticed and comes to my mind immediately.
I wonder if the devs keep on working on it or... leave it be... in its unfinished, unpolished state.
I nearly lost my interest in playing it, when reaching the Summer area and ironically the Autumn area saved it!
Yet the repeating "we don't allow you to leave the new area until will tell you" is a bit far stretched. We get the urgency BUT we also need to get stuff to update our weapons so get off my back!!!
Bottom Line: It's an enjoyable game with a nice pacing issue. If you can overlook such details then please go ahead and play this game. A must-play for everyone loving mediocracy.
