Probably the best X-Com style game i've ever played, if you ignore the one with the plumber, the princess and the rabbids on a competitor's console. I'm playing the base game on hard difficulty, which is a singleplayer campaign, but the game also now features a coop mode i didn't get to try out yet.
(X-Com style means: Turn based, a hand full of unique hero units, action points for attacks and movement, isometric, highly tactical, with cover mechanic beside walls, crates and barrels, ranged and meele, clever AI, differing chance to hit. The chance to hit in Spaceland is super fair, not as harsh as in the original X-Com games, but you can still botch a shot if you use a silly angle or a distance too far for the hero and weapon.)
Missions:
The beautiful but static overworld map spreads mission nodes in a linear fashion. You can revisit any mission you want. There is no perma death, you only loose a dead soldier for the course of the current mission and having one die will reduce the rewards you get at the end of each mission.
Story:
Storytelling happens in dialogues before, during and after the missions. And you can also have optional dialogue between team members while on the overworld map. It's pretty compelling, starting with a distress signal from a planet your small crew follows and a crash landing beside an abandonned seeming military base. It's an alien world, so you might find some surprises.
Progress:
You unlock soldiers by rescuing them, you unlock gear by finding caches in the overworld map and you unlock perks with computer parts you gain as reward for reaching certain goals during missions like: Keeping everyone alive, finishing the mission with minimal turns, finding all the secrets in the map. Secrets themselves give you computer parts aswell. You also find and get money, for money you can buy and upgrade your team's gear.
Customization:
None in the base game - the heroes and their weapons are set, you just upgrade them and unlock their perks. But with that come unique and beautiful 3D models that change depending on what armor or weapon upgrade you have equipped right now. The weapon types are not interchangable between heroes, the sniper for example will always carry a sniper rifle and a knife. It just can happen that two heroes for example can use knives, there you can switch the different levels of knives between those heroes.
AI and Gameplay:
The AI on hard difficulty is clever and will always choose the closest target with the most impact on your team's overall health. The gameplay itself is stellar, every tile is 100% clearly visible and marked, there's never anything obscured unless it's out of your team's line of sight. The maps are relatively complex but the geometry is simple, so you never get confused about where you can walk or how to continue on a map. The action points are well balanced, i've never felt that any of the soldiers was a waste of a team slot, they all bring their own, very potent skills.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves the modern X-Com style games - this is definately one of the best. The only thing that's missing is the strategic part and the base building - it's just perks and gear upgrades. And the things that are the most outstanding in this game are the boss encounters, the special mission maps, the many unique heroes and the beautiful 3D artwork during missions.
