Death Trash was initially attractive to me: I love pixel art, RPGs, and sci-fi; the action combat is good; and open-world RPGs are my jam! I waited a couple of years before buying it, and it's still in Early Access... generally not a great sign. What lost my interest quickly to the point that I wouldn't have bought this game (on a good Steam Sale at least, whew) had I known is that the "open world" aspect is the design type of Points of Interest on the world map that you load between such that when you leave one you're given the world map to jump to and load into that new POI. I understand why devs do this, but this design isn't true open world, it's just basically teleporting between small maps. Not a fan. I can't give a proper review because I've barely touched the game since I dropped it over the not-actually-open world design style. I see other reviews pointing out that it's been in Early Access for a long time (2021; 4 years as of writing this) with a long time since the last content update and a removed or undated roadmap, so I would advise avoiding it until at least a full, proper release. This is the bad example of Early Access titles, on the same side of the spectrum as Star Citizen.

I have been enjoying the game so far, I like pickpocketing everything and then killing the enemies immediately afterward to super boos xp gains early on. so far i've only come across one spot i'm not overly fond of. I found a holo program thing that lets me do simulated combat in the vr machine, however I'm either not high enough level, strong enough or something to get out, i've gone through 3-6 waves and at the end of each wave of new enemies i have a limited span of time to try and heal up and such before the next wave starts. it'd be nice if I could exit the program after starting it as once its started it basically so far locks me in until i die. idk if its a skill issue or if i just don't know how to leave the program before the next wave arrives and ganks me Other wise I've enjoyed the story i've come across, the gentle nudges towards the main plot, but the freedom to go helterskelter into the random wastes and just pickpocket and kill bandits if i so choose. maybe even stumble onto sidequests i'm much too underleveled to be at yet.

Reminds me of fallout but with modern features. Hope will be released some day.

Death Trash is NOT FINISHED, however I still highly recommend playing it because of how good it is. The game does an excellent job of slowly building up the lore and setting of the game as you play, and the modern combat mixed with RPG elements from older games like Fallout 1 & 2 really make this game great.

It's not a long game. It's in early access, and development has been quite slow, but the quality of what it is is very good. I love the fighting mechanics. It's very well executed and requires some skill to get good at it, and it's very satisfying once you pull it off successfully. The story and the worldbuilding is excellent. I'm guessing this is why it takes so long time. It has so much potential. Even though it's unfinished, I think it's worth getting into it now, but know you should know what you're getting into. It also works great on the steam deck.

Pros -The pixel art style is fun and lets the scenery really build the details. -The hard parts are hard. You will fail areas over and over and you don't get an easy ride. You actually have to progress over time. -It's weird and feels new even though I'm sure we've all seen games like this before. Cons -Sometimes you have no idea what to do to progress the story and you're not given extra details. You'll have to google it if you can't figure it out. -The game isn't finished so you get what you have and there aren't any real plans on what to expect and when it will happen. -Running around can get repetitive FAST. Overall I would still buy it in the steam sale and play it. I can't wait until we get more added to the game because I will play it and come back to say more. I wouldn't pay full price yet since it doesn't have a ton of content. Keep up the good work. I wasn't disappointed with the game at all. Its charming and fun.

This game could be really, really great. It is a shame that because the team is so small, the amount of work is just too staggering to complete in a reasonable amount of time before people inevitably begin to move on. And for that to happen to a game like this, a game with THIS much potential....really sucks.

It is essentially abandonware at this point. They seem to push an update (without new content) after Steam marks them over a year without updating in EA. This game is turning into another example of "Reasons to Avoid EA games."

Not quite Abandonware, but even after 4 years it's not leaving Early Access any time soon. All updates are small & cosmetic. Frequent stretches of radio silence. There's a great core to this game, and it would be an easy recommend if it were finished...or updating on time...or offered for under $9.00. But they're still asking $20 (unless it's on sale, at which point it's "only" $16) for an unfinished and almost-abandoned game. True disappointment.

DeathTrash is a quintessential "Forever Early Access" title. The store page and product description may suggest that a final release or version of this game is in development, with an expected release of "sometime". I believe the store page, as of this review, suggests 2025 as a release date. I bought this title very shortly after its entrance to Early Access, under recommendations of a critic who generally matches my interests. I have spent the intervening three and a half years with a license to a build that has undergone few, if any notable changes. It has been a foundational memory in my purchasing habits since, and I now rarely engage with early access titles. I had a total of about five hours of unique content on my first playthrough, which was about the amount of content I saw two years later, in 2023. I am increasingly concerned with Crafting Legends' ability to ship this product. As a small team of two individuals, I question whether a product of this size and ambition was ever reasonable within the projected timeframes and budget. I do not recommend Death Trash as an Early Access product. I do not think what is currently available is worth twenty dollars, and I am not confident that the price, nor content will change. Should this product see a final build, I will return to the game to edit and re-write my review.
