The many difficulty spikes, the limited number of checkpoints at high difficulty levels and the fact that you can only retry the map once after a failure otherwise you fail the entire run, cannot make me recommend this game, even when it's being sold at a huge discount.
Pity.

This genuinely was a fun game, it didn't deserve all of the backlash, I do think however it was misleading to say "From the developers of L4D".
There's a certain charm I enjoyed with this game, I liked how you could build your characters up throughout a campaign and get certain cards, however they killed the speedrunning community off with a single handwave and then made it so your entire deck was available from the start, meaning building up to your strong build meant nothing anymore, which imo took the winds out of the sails for this game. That and the DLC as a whole were good, but ended abruptly. It's a shame, as there was so much more that could have been explored, but development was ended in 2022, so do yourself a favour and do not buy this game, even at a 95% off, as there's nobody else to play with, and no ending for this cool story. What a shame.

Will I still play this game from time to time with friends? Yes,
But Overall the "flashy graphics" dont do anything for me when the basic game play is quite boring....
Just magg dumping on zombies, very boring maps, poor lighting in some maps, and never feels exciting or scary, or thrilling. Just dumping mags of ammo endlessly into "zombies" that look like life like dolls. Some people love this type of game, turn off your brain and go wild. But even then Its just tedious and gets stale after 2-3 missions.
This is a great game if your wasted and wanna chill with friends and shoot some zombies with pretty gun graphics. The game isnt hard at all. Every difficulty just makes things do more damage and increase some challenge, but the gameplay is just uninspired and boring.
This looks like it was slapped together by a team of ten people over a summer vacation.
Overall not the worst game I have ever played, but not close to being good. And I LOVE anything zombies.
Got it on sale 95% off for 4 bucks. And even that seems like I got ripped off.

Back 4 Blood tries to capture the magic of Left 4 Dead 2, and while it gets some things right, it overcomplicates what made its predecessor great. The gunplay is solid, the environments look great, and the co-op experience can be fun with the right team. However, the game stumbles with its overdesigned mechanics—card-based perks, constant ammo scarcity, and enemy mutations that feel more frustrating than challenging. Instead of the simple, frantic survival of L4D2, you’re constantly micromanaging builds, economy, and objectives that take away from the raw fun of blasting through hordes.
The biggest issue is the zombie design. Special Ridden feel excessive, with many of them being bullet sponges that slow the pacing rather than making encounters dynamic. Where L4D2 had a perfect balance of chaos and simplicity, Back 4 Blood feels like it’s trying too hard to be something more complex. It’s still enjoyable, especially with friends, but it lacks the pick-up-and-play magic that made its spiritual predecessor a timeless classic. If you’re looking for a more structured and tactical co-op shooter, it’s worth a try—but if you just want classic, chaotic zombie survival, you might find yourself going back to Left 4 Dead 2 instead.

This game is perfectly fine. Long Story short: Pick it up on Sale. Only one person needs the DLC. Don't expect left for dead. This isn't the same genre of shooter as left for dead really but you will feel familiar mechanics.
I wouldn't pay full price for it. But I picked up the game and all the DLC for between 10-15 dollars during the christmas sale. My friends and I are having a lot of fun. The gun play is solid. The levels are fine so far (we finished act one). AND only one person needs to have the DLC to access the levels. My friends got to spend like 5 dollars to get the game, and now we all get to play all the DLC together, which helps a lot with the cost. I've also played through Act 1 solo and it is perfectly serviceable.
The Ridden hives could be less frustrating. I can tell where the devs tried to telegraph and teach you something, but the hives are so visually busy (and honestly gross looking, like in terms of them being pretty biologically designed) that it can be really frustrating to figure out what the game wants you to do when you're being swarmed. And there isn't a tutorial for them. But they are also optional.

I don't understand the card system, I just want to shoot zombies, so I ignore most of the time. It's a more expensive Left4Dead with unnecessarily high graphics requirements. Can't recommend it at full price, but on super sale, why not?

Good snipe! 10 bucks for the full experience that shouldve been there since launch? superb!
Wouldn't recommend getting anywhere near full price but for what seems to be at least 20 hours of enjoyment this deal is pretty legit. 3 hours in and Im still having fun with the game - but that doesnt mean its not without its glaring flaws of course.
The game is very clearly trying to be a successor to l4d but it lacks all of the soul that made l4d engaging. The story and writing are mid at best and the environments dont invoke any feelings. Its hard to describe without playing. Each part of the campaign is very distinct with their own objectives and settings - yet they're all so unmemorable and insignificant. The characters are also very forgettable because they rarely have any meaningful dialog or depth
other than the lack of love, the game overall has some bizarre-o pacing issues with both map traversal and difficulty that really hold it back BUT despite all of its apparent flaws the game does some things very well
+The gun play is probably the most satisfying ive ever touched, they really nailed it with sounds, animations and customization. Even melee combat feels very nice
+Even though i critiqued the soul of the levels, I will admit each section was unique in its own right, and there are a lottt of campaign levels with some bonuses if you got the full thing
+The game allows you to use any playstyle you want for the most part
+The card system (pick 15 perk system) is a really cool way to experiment and replay
And the biggest pro of them all is how the campaigns flow - you have one really big 16 act campaign composed of many smaller maps and you start "runs" where you go through these levels collecting new power ups and attachments and stuff and it saves in between safe rooms and you can leave whenever and come back to it and you can start new runs with different builds for different outcomes, which i gotta admit is a really cool way of handling campaigns in a new refreshing way
In a lot of ways B4B is way better than l4d but it misses the mark a bit when you start getting into the artistic vision aspect of it. Overall its a fantastic "im glad I waited for when this game hit the discount bin" game but I wouldve hated it on launch or if I paid anything over 80% off for sure.

I have over 200 hours on PS5.
It's incredibly annoying that this game has such a bad reputation. There's nothing wrong with it. Some of the level layouts aren't great but it has a lot of replayability and the progression is pretty cool, it allows you to make builds that allow you to have unique playstyles and improve your effectiveness with certain things.
If you read pretty much all the negative reviews they can barely even articulate what they don't like about it beyond "It's not Left 4 Dead."
No, it's not Left 4 Dead, and using a similar name was a bad call, but it's a solid game that stands up on its own.
Grab it with all the DLC on a hefty discount. Don't go in treating it like L4D and you'll probably enjoy yourself.

I played opening day. I only come back now to write the review that I should have written a long time ago. This game falls short of its predecessors for many reasons. One of which is this misleading advertising that this game was made by previous left 4 dead devs Secondly, the glitches make it no fun. Third, every base game mission, not dlc, starts in the exact same spot and you need to fight through the exact same area multiple times. It makes the environment boring. The last thing I'll say, is that this game doesn't have open modding The reason that L4D2 still has a thriving playbase is that valve knew to allow modding. From custom maps, weapons, skins, and all without having to pay for what the developers make that I don't want to buy.
If this game is ever given modding support, then you might actually see a resurgence in players The cards are a really cool aspect and the graphics are easily better the left 4 dead. Its missing the charm and love for the community that valve showed for the originals
