Rebel Galaxy Outlaw Reviews
Out of cash, out of luck, out on the fringe. Juno Markev has a killer to tail, a debt to pay, and more trouble headed her way. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw takes place in a greasy, blue-collar world of outlaws, truckers, cops and thieves.

It's fine, never got into it as much as the first. I didn't really gain anything from the extra dimension and it just feels a bit more tedious to fly around and do stuff. The first one is far better at being what it want's to be and just having fun with it.

A must-play for fans of the Wing Commander games!
We start with the overall design of Wing Commander: Privateer emphasizing total player freedom: go anywhere, do anything, *be* anything: trader, miner, pirate, mercenary, and more.... We also take (most of) the guns, missiles, and many of the ships: something like the Tarsus (Platypus), Orion (Sonora), Galaxy (Durston), Centurion (Coyote), and Demon (Foxbat) are all represented here, with slightly tweaked designs.
From Wing Commander 2 we take the blue star field, colorful aesthetics, and appealing styling of the Broadsword bomber (here inspiring the "Sonora" and "Sequoia" light cargo ships).
From Wing Commander 3, we take power-management and the auto-slide. (In WC3 sliding was exclusive to the Arrow and Excalibur, but here *all* the pilotable ships can do it.)
From Wing Commander 4, we take the 3D texture-mapped graphics, and the awesome Black Lance Dragon (here inspiring the "Sandhawk" and "Blood Eagle" fighters), and the idea of "slug weapons" that don't consume energy when fired, making for more interesting loadout choices.
We also add some fresh new ideas:
* An Auto-Pursuit button, which streamlines dogfights without diminishing the challenge.
* Buddies: friendly characters you can recruit to be your wing man/woman/bot for a little while.
* The option to purchase and upgrade your own base!
* Fun minigames in the many dingy space bars you will come across.
* Controls optimized for gamepad.
* Photo mode.
* A full-fledged ship painting tool!
* A GTA-style "subspace radio" with 70 hours of music in several genres.
Those who have not played Privateer should beware: this game does not hold your hand. It's up to you to know when to fight, when to run away, and when to beg for mercy, so it's much more of a "freelance pilot simulator" than a game with gently-ramping progression. You are not expected to be able to win every encounter, and some "upgrades" may actually make your life harder!
Despite the graphical and mechanical updates, this is still a 90's game: the burden is on you, the player, to explore the game world and figure it out. The developers did put out a Tip Sheet though:

Reading the Wing Commander: Privateer manual might help, too.
An ADHD dogfight sim in a sea of autism space sims
I may have been the ideal audience for this game. I loved Wing Commander Privateer growing up, so I love that this game took so many of the best parts of that and made something fresh. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw:
+ is not dry. It has bright colours, humour and fast, fun gameplay.
+ has big, crunchy, satisfying explosions, blaster and bullets. This is so often missing from space sims
+ has the auto-face feature which has changed space sims for me.
+ has a player character who isn't just a generic dude or women. Juno is middle-aged, caustic and unimpressionable and I love her.
+ has TEXTURE. I love how tactile the cockpit feels.
+ has a soundtrack, but I just loaded in a bunch of tracks I like, and it's fun hearing my tunes come on the radio.
- is repetitive. The dogfights and missions don't vary very much. I don't mind this because I like yelling 'LET'S DANCE MOTHERF*CKERS' and kicking on the afterburner and emptying my magazine into a pirate's six (that is not innuendo I do actually mean murdering pirates)
- doesn't flesh out Juno enough. I'm really rooting for her and she deserves more depth to her character.
I love this game. Maybe it's the ADHD space sim and it's up against all the autism space sims. But whatever it's doing, I'm finding that few titles match it for sheer explosive fun.
