I never play games that are scary, but I told myself I should at least try one game from the franchise.
This game is a remake; I've never played the original.
I learned what survival horror is. Limited ammunition, slow but incredibly resilient enemies. The key is to stay calm and not give in to panic. A magnificent lesson in conveying sensations through gameplay. The atmosphere is truly successful, and I constantly feel in danger. I feel alone in a world ravaged by zombies, a true post-apocalyptic zombie experience. The puzzles are okay, and the interface and map are well-designed; they prevent us from wandering aimlessly without being overly helpful.
Special mention to Mr. X—I loved/hated playing hide-and-seek with him.
The game is short, but you play it multiple times with variations, totaling around 20 hours.
A brilliant interpretation of the post-apocalyptic zombie genre (The Last of Us could learn a thing or two).

Resident Evil 2 is a short but satisfying game that can be experienced from two different perspectives. Every encounter is a little puzzle that will drain your resources. Your job is to make the best of any situation and decide which resources you're willing to part with (health, ammo, supplies, time, etc.)
In my opinion the achievements are really boring and the game's extras section is not worth visiting
I'm a big fan of the game engine they used and the cinematography. The Tyrant was definitely the highlight of the game for me. His presence created a much necessary tension and that in turn made the whole experience pretty unforgettable

This is an exceedingly fun game! I've never played a Resident Evil title before but after this, I am sorely tempted to give at least the next Leon Kennedy entry a try!
I think my favorite part is the earnest and involved attempt to reproduce RE's *goofiness*. It's a tone that I haven't seen in any other game - and if I did, I'd just think they're riffing of Resident Evil: the late '90s aesthetic, the combination of horrible photorealistic monsters & zombies, an inkling of slapstick abuse directed at its protagonists and the cheap-action-movie-script-passed-through-localization-translators quality of the dialogue. I would call it a relative of Hideo Kojima's writing style, but very distinct and stand-alone. I streamed this game for my friend and we had amazing fun laughing with what is, ostensibly, a horror game. I must stress: the tone is intentional. The developers know what they're doing here, recreating the inherent silliness of early games in a very high-fidelity context. Their commitment to the bit is absolute and I salute their mighty efforts.

As one of the best remakes around, any fan of Resident Evil should get their hands on this game. No, it's not perfect, but I feel with the quality justifies the few differences. Please, buy this game. You'll thank me, and yourself later.

Great remake. The horror and suspense is diminished a bit by the change in the way movement between rooms is now done. It's open world style instead of that loading screen. On the other hand, there are new additions that keep your heart rate up.

I've already played the snot out of this game after first experiencing it a few months ago, and I will continue to do so. It is currently my favorite Resident Evil (currently in the process of playing through the series), so I figure it's about time I leave a review.
In my opinion, the older RE games perfectly embody Survival Horror. A limited number of resources and limited inventory, requiring you to think carefully about how to proceed. Narrow corridors and confined spaces, making confrontations inevitable with the otherwise non-threatening shambling corpses. A constant tension while you try to survive through both atmospheric elements (ambient music and graphic style) and gameplay ones (the aforementioned examples, plus fear of the unknown; being unable to tell what enemies might be hiding around the next corner, and the worry of an area that you previously cleared out no longer being safe). And in some cases, a constant threat hounding you that you have no hope of eliminating, and you have no choice but to avoid. These factors offer so much more to horror than any number of cheap jump-scares and other tactics can offer. Resident Evil 2 Remake may not play in the style of the old RE games, but it still manages to retain all of the above factors, and even enhances some of them.
A playthrough will typically only take you a few hours to complete (less if you're very familiar with the game), but there's still a lot to offer here. Both playable characters have significant differences in their experiences at the Raccoon City Police Department, from the weapons available to them to the different areas they explore. Further, even more changes are present in a 2nd run, offering a total of four different ways you can play through the game. There are also three different difficulties and a ranking system (largely based on time to completion) as well as incentive to play them, which altogether makes this game extremely replayable. And I'm still not finished; there are a variety of shorter scenarios (10-20 minutes each) you can play through, each offering their own challenges and rewards. To top it all off, if you still want more out of the game like I did (and still do), RE(dot)net offers weekly challenges for both the main game and one of the side modes.
I feel like I can't accurately describe exactly why I find this game to be such a fun and quality experience to the point that I've replayed it at least 20 times now. But I highly recommend playing this masterpiece. Be warned though; the greatest horror in the game is found early on. If you don't want to be scarred for life, don't look at the gas prices!

Great game that perfectly blended classic RE's survival horror design with RE4-style shooting.
RE3 remake was a bit of a cashgrab, RE4 remake is good but leans much more on the action side (which I do love but still).
I wish Capcom would make another game like it.
Fair critique of the game - A/B scenarios is wasted on the remake because the roots are too similar. They should have focused on making Leon and Claire's scenarios more different. They solve the same puzzles and fight the same bosses, which is a bit disappointing.

More than twenty five years after the original Resident Evil 2, Capcom have surpassed themselves and shown how a remake is done right. RE2 Remake is a reimagining of the original yet expands on gameplay and visuals, all the while trying to maintain the core elements and stay true to its predecessor. Players return to the haunting Raccoon City, and can control either Leon or Claire in separate, yet converging, campaigns. The T-virus has spread throughout the city and once normal people are turning to zombies or even worse creatures. Both protagonists arrive in the city on the same day and are trying to piece together what is transpiring and how the evil Umbrella Corporation fits into it all. The game is filled with action and a lot of tense moments. One of the main antagonists is Mr. X, a towering and terrifying creature who will relentlessly pursue us throughout many parts of the game. He can be slowed down but not stopped, and hearing his thunderous footsteps as he approaches truly adds a level of tension and dread.
While the original had fixed camera angles, RE2 Remake has an over-the-shoulder view, modernizing the gameplay. The combat is engaging, and the game also focuses on survival and puzzle elements. Players need to explore their surroundings and find ammo and equipment to survive. Visually this game has been completely overhauled and improved thanks to the RE Engine. Player and zombie models are superb and highly detailed. The lighting and shadows create a quintessential survival horror atmosphere. Notable environmental highlights are the police station, sewers and lab. The voice acting is solid and compelling. Sound work such as the moans and groans of zombies as well as the aforementioned Mr. X's footsteps truly make this a harrowing experience. The game also ships with DLC that adds more content with different scenarios and challenges.
Resident Evil 2 Remake is one of the most impressive remakes I have ever played and Capcom has provided a prime example on how to modernize and improve on a classic while not losing its main essense. The Resident Evil series pioneered the survival horror genre and if this, and future remakes, are anything to go by, it will remain one of the best.
