I'm a big fan of climbing games in VR and have pretty much played them all. This is my new favorite. The game starts out really simple to teach you the mechanics and ease you into it but then gets crazy! It has the feel like you're inside a classic platformer game while being something completely unique at the same time.
====Game Mechanics/Physics====
This game's physics are really good and actions feel natural. I've been able to easily grip things and climb quickly with no issues or false misses. Throwing/flinging yourself feels really good in this game too.
====Replay-ability====
The game is just super fun. It's a game I can see myself consistently going back to even after I have beaten it.
The game also offers some built in replay-ability. There are items and bonus rounds to collect in every level. There is also the ability to unlock modifiers that either make the game easier or more difficult.
====Graphics====
Graphics are cartoony and not tying to be realistic. This is not at all a negative. It works for the type of game this is.
====Issues/Suggestions for improvement====
Overall solid game. No issues or glitches so far.
Global leader board should be the default one shown instead of the local leader board.
INFO:
====Locomotion======
This is a climbing game. You move though climbing, swinging and dropping. There also is a jetpack power up item that gives you a short burst.
====Avatar====
You only see your hands.
====Play length====
4 themed sections with 8 levels each. Currently I've completed the first 3 sections and its taken me about 4 hours. I suspect the last section will take much longer as gotten more and more challenging. It took me 2 hours to beat just section 3. I will update this once I beat the game.
====Physical Activity Level====
moderate
CONCLUSION:
====Worth buying====
Yes, at full price. This is actually fairly priced (if not under priced) for the amount of content and quality of game play.

This game has so much content, still in Zone 2 out of 4 right now :D
Really fun! Definitely a must buy made for VR game for anyone with a headset.
The climbing feels very smooth, I love flinging myself around like a monkey.
There are a lot of enemy types to smash with different patterns and abilities.
The art style while simple, definitely highlights the gameplay and works perfectly in its style for this game.

Do you like platformers? Do you like VR? Then buy this game. Don't Look Down is a really neat game brimming with content and polish. Really what we have hear is a finely tuned translation of the traditional platformer to the VR setting. Not in the sense of say Astrobot which just puts you in the game, but a game that makes YOU the platforming mascot. I couldn't get Donkey Kong Country out of my head while playing this.
I found this game kind of out of nowhere, very soon after it was released. I believe a few days after? No one was talking about it and I gave it a chance because of some positive reviews I saw on the store page. I figured I'd pass that on and leave a review myself.
Gameplay
Having played quite a few climbing VR games after this one, DLD makes me feel spoiled. This game has by far the most well tuned, accurate controls for this type of game. Unlike others, I almost never reach to grab something only to find out I didn't as I tumble to my death when I let my other hand go. I don't groan with anxiety when I have to fling myself towards something to progress, I do it for fun, to get better times, and to skip over obstacles simply because it works when I do it. I'm not saying it's perfect 100 percent of the time but deaths almost always felt like they were my own fault.
The game puts most of the mechanics on the table early on but does go on to do interesting things with them across it's 4 differently themed worlds. That's not to say new things aren't introduced as the game goes on such as enemies and level types/motifs. Rising lava, lasers, moving platforms. There are secret bonus challenges ala DKC. The usual platformer fare. It never felt like it was getting too repetitive.
It certainly DOES get difficult though. I would say it pretty steadily increases in challenge up until the end of the 3rd world in which case it ramps way up and gets a LOT harder. This is when I stopped searching for secret areas as getting to the end was enough of a challenge. If this sounds daunting to you, there are some modifiers you can put on to make the game easier, or harder, if you so desire.
That said, the power ups do a good job of making you feel, well, powered up so. If I'm having trouble with a section I often feel like I can instead play it safer in easier areas and take advantage of the jet pack, a couple well placed shots, or take a free hit with armor to progress.
There's plenty of content here. Even with all my hours I still haven't finished the final world. I'm sure skilled players could get it done in half the time but 8 hours for a VR game is pretty unheard of right now. There's also reason to go back and play it again with modifiers or to go for better times on the leaderboards. It's definitely worth the price tag.
Presentation/Music
This brings me to the weakest part of the game, the presentation. Now, I personally find it charming and it's very low hardware friendly. But, it's undeniably low fidelity. If you don't mind a cartoonish style it's far from hard on the eyes and achieves what it sets out to do so I can't really dock it too hard for that. Just don't go in expecting Robo-Recall level visuals. It's not like the devs are hiding this either as the trailer is pretty honest about what this game is about.
The music is serviceable but does get kind of repetitive (especially if you get stuck on a level) and is honestly very forgettable. It does very much remind me of 8bit MegaMan at times though which is always a plus. I honestly love the sound effects but they are very cheesey. They forlorn "wOOOoooOOOs" and "whrrrrrs" of the robots are oddly soothing. The "Ouch!" when you take damage or fall always makes me laugh and kind of takes the sting out of the failure. The little Rayman-esque musical robots in the high score menu always entertain me for at least 30-45 seconds before I move on.
Closing Thoughts
I super hope this game gets a level editor and/or some expansions in the future as even though there's plenty of content here, I can't help but want more. There are some fun options to play around with if you want to change things up for future playthroughs but nothing beats brand new content.
I've played A LOT of VR games. This is one of the best. I'd give this game an 8/10 purely on the fun factor alone, but because it has so much content I'll bump it up to a 9/10. It doesn't look like much at face value but it's actually very good. It's just really fun and polished. If you liked To the Top, With Loneliness or any VR climbing/obstacle course type game do yourself a favor and pick this up. It's totally worth it and one of my most played VR games period. I'm suprised more people aren't talking about it

As great as this game probably is, given that the demo was so much fun, it simply doesn't work. You can't get past the first main menu because the controllers simply aren't recognized in game. I'm not sure what the bug is, but it doesn't work on steam vr at all. I really enjoyed the demo to this, and really wish I could play this thing. But it looks like the devs aren't going to be updating it anytime soon, given the fact it hasn't been updated in 2 years.

Imagine if a climbing game took elements from classic platforming games - that's Don't Look Down! It took a few minutes to get used to the physics here but after a couple levels I found myself cruising around, grabbing enemies and smashing them as I'm jumping to my next grab point, and overcoming a nice little difficulty curve as you progress through a LOT of different stages and worlds.
With the price drop and continued support from the devs, I think it's as good a time as any to try this game for yourself. Took me a little over 3 hours to complete and enjoyed the whole experience! You can see me playing it here: https://youtu.be/-VHMV256mHo

I like this. Initial frustrations with grabbing things and with using the jetpack gave way to a surprisingly fun experience.

As I suffer quite a bit from neck and shoulder pains I would like to recommend this game to everyone who suffers from the same. Most VR games have the player looking either straight ahead or down, but this game mostly had one looking up but also makes the player look all around and this combined with the vary varied arm motions that the gameplay encourages, makes this an excellent game to help loosen up one's neck and shoulder muscles.
Apart from these benefits, the gameplay has a nice progression with some fun speed challenges thrown in here and there (optional) and a friendly and easy to read visual presentation. In terms of graphics it's about on-par with mobile VR, so don't expect amazing graphical fidelity, but it really doesn't matter when you're playing.
As a slight negative, if you are using the Valve Index controllers, you'll need to either set op your own mappings or use a user submitted one (there's a quite good one already available) as the default mapping plain doesn't work.
