This game is not “a copy of Resident Evil” but an oath to it. It’s not perfect, indeed, it has its flaws and it’s also not made by Capcom, but by a way smaller studio, Invader Studios, but it surely does the job of being a good survival horror game. It combines the puzzles we’ve seen in the RE series and similar games, with good lore and story and really interesting mechanics (such as the reload system) that we have not seen in any similar games yet. The graphics may not be its strongest point (particularly the character's faces), but the atmosphere and scenarios are very well designed. I don’t understand all the negative reviews comparing it to RE and saying it’s not as good as them. RE has some “not-so-good” games, and I’m a huge fan of the series, but I believe Daymare has earned its place in the genre. I bought it at a discount (~80%), but I wouldn’t have regretted buying it at full price. Give it a try!

Not sure what the point of this game is? You get stranded with no ammo, but when you pick up ammo you aren't allowed to reload your weapon and oh by the way, every door hides another zombie that you have no time to react to so you end up losing half your life at every encounter. Cool idea, very poor execution. The dialogue is beyond stilted, and often times doesn't match the subtitles at all. Aiming is nearly impossible because the slightest motion, regardless of sensitivity causes your character to flail wildly so you wind up dumping half a mag into the wall all around the zombie like a bad cartoon. I get that this was meant to be like a 90's game but this needs a LOT of work.

Sloppy jank and not the good kind There's just a lack of polish that cant be excused and the game takes itself too seriously while getting alot wrong within its own seriousness. I've had this game for a while and every time a try to give it another chance, it quickly reminds me why I always quit playing. Take for example the 1st harder enemy encounter after the cooling room puzzle, they just randomly and unceremoniously throw this enemy in that is not only faster but does more damage in a very small room. The issue is pacing and that enemy is thrown in too early while most players are still trying to get comfortable with the overly tedious controls. over all its a waste of time and I'm not sure how many devs worked on this but even if it were just one person they just simply have a misunderstanding of what makes good survival horror fun meanwhile rushing things that ended up costing it's polish. I could write a whole essay of what this does wrong and what marks it misses but I'll just leave this off with, just save your money and time. Unless the game goes on sale for 3 bucks or something, don't bother with it.

+ Strong points: - Although stiff, the gameplay is not bad - Puzzles better thought than in any Resident Evil - Some ideas (like Samuel's hallucinations) are interesting - Some detailed environments - Weak points: - Never really manages to free itself from its models - Narration sometimes talkative and often very average - Badly placed checkpoints - Limited bestiary - Only four weapons are available - Artistically inconsistent Summary: Daymare 1998 is a continuation of Resident Evil 2, Invader Studios recites their lesson to the letter by offering everything that one would expect from such a game. Unfortunately, if the Italians thought to check all the boxes of the mirror game (within the limits of the allocated budget), they forgot a little to add enough new features and this pinch of originality so that the result does not lock itself into its status of simply referential work. Interesting therefore for those who would wait for news of the next remake of Capcom but quickly forgettable in the end. 12/20
