First of all, if you are familiar with the “fighting” genre via titles like “Mortal Kombat” or “Street Fighter”, this game is probably not for you.
There are no jumps, no flying kicks or fireball throwing here. This game is focused on close fist-to-fist fighting, blocks, holds and throws. The closest analog would be the “Virtual Fighter” series. Some people like it this way - it is actually more realistic, but for unprepared gamers it may look boring as different fighters barely differ from each other.
I suggest you install a free demo of the game and try it first before buying the whole product. Only if you are satisfied with the gameplay - proceed to the purchase. The developers treat you fairly here.
I am not familiar with the “Dead or Alive” series, so I can not compare this game with its predecessors.
As I already said this game does not follow the most well-known patterns with its gameplay. For example: there are 4 different types of blocks for the 4 different types of incoming attacks. In the fight you should focus on attacking and defending particular body areas, choosing the right combos for the particular situations and so on.
We have a good selection of fighters. Each represents a particular martial art school and has a unique set of combos and moves. Although the difference is not so noticeable as in other “fighting” games due to the very nature of the gameplay. The most notable difference is character alignment towards the “punching-kicking” or “wrestling” approach. Still each character is unique and feels differently once you dive deep enough in the gameplay details. But the player should be let’s say “attuned” to be able to enjoy these differences. For most of the audience all characters will appear almost the same.
The arenas are fully three dimensional. We can move in any direction during the fight, avoiding enemy attacks with backstep for example. Different arenas have a different layout: some are square or circle, some are long tight corridors and so on. We have to consider where the walls are during the fight, luring the opponent into a corner or using the wall to launch a special attack.
Some arenas have special objects, which deal extra damage if you manage to throw an opponent into them. It sounds like a good idea, but its implementation is quite poor. Usually they deal too much damage and these objects are not exhausted upon a single use. In the end the match often ends up in throwing the opponent into the same dinosaur over and over again, while he is unable to move out of the danger spot. These objects should be “single use”: take an opportunity and deal an extra damage, but only once - there should still be a room for the fist fighting after the environment usage in the same match after all.
There is a “story” mode, but a pitiful one. It’s just a sequence of the short cinematics, which is supposed to link the set of fighting matches into some logical sequence. Total crap. It is hard to understand what is going on, hard to understand different characters’ links and goals, it’s not interesting and not impressive at all.
The list of game modes is too short. Besides the “story”, there are “arcade”, “versus” and “survival”.
In “arcade” we fight the classic sequence of matches against different opponents, without anything special, like a boss fight or something. In “survival” we do exactly the same, but using a single health bar for all matches.
For the “single player” the game becomes boring very quickly. The only interesting part is completing the character specific challenges, like launching specific combos, winning in certain conditions and so on.
The graphics are good. The game appears more like a cartoon than like a movie, but the visual is quite enjoyable and has enough details. The animations are thorough. And of course, do not forget about let’s say “decent physics” around particular female body parts, which make the action more enjoyable.
The game attempts to compensate for the lack of diversity in the gameplay using extra visual content. The countless of “revealing” outfits for the female characters have brought the game a title of “DLC simulator”. This is quite a sad situation as the game ended up as a “doll dress up” instead of “fighting”. And the developers’ greed with the prices made the impression ever worse.
Music is unremarkable: nothing catches the ear. There is some diversity in character entry speech depending on the opponent he/she faces, but it is far behind “Injustice 2” or “Mortal Kombat X”.
Total rating: 5/10.
Even considering this to be a special type of “fighting” it has too many design problems.
And most of all: it becomes boring too quickly.

Before I start with my review I want to say that I'm not someone who plays a lot of fighting games. I also can't seem to be good at them. With this one however I'm having a lot more fun than with other fighting games I played. I don't know why.
First up, the controls. I think they are good for the most part but sometimes my gamepad isn't recognized and I have to restart the game. I also find it difficult to input certain combos due to how fast the button presses have to be - I am aware this is supposed to be a fast paced game - and also how diagonal directions are not recognized as well with the D-pad.
The graphics. I think they still hold up pretty good for a game from 2019. A big improvement over DOA5 in my opinion. Not much else to say here.
Now for the juicy part of this game. The fan service. Attractive/Appealing female character design is a recipe for success in most cases. Not sure how much of a success this game was/is but I for my part can't complain about what I'm seeing. Now, there are bikini outfits among other skimpy outfits which can be unlocked, again, either through gameplay or paid DLC. However, the way the outfits which are unlocked through gameplay are unlocked is just plain stupid. You have to either play Arcade mode or DOW Quests. Both of which can get you Clothing Patterns which will unlock outfits for purchase with coins(in game currency that is also obtained through gameplay). BUT(T), they will be randonly assigned to an outfit for the character you have obtained them with.
Last up I wanna talk about the music in this game. I LOVE some of the music in this game. There are so many BGM tracks you can unlock either through gameplay or by purchasing DLC like the season passes (which have an ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS price tag btw). I recently bought the second season pass because it includes some the bikini outfits for the girls and I noticed there were some BGM track also included. I open the game, give them a listen and almost instantly fell in love with them.
Overall I would say the game is a solid 7/10 for me.

This game plays like it's from a previous generation.
Does not work on all computers/GPUs, you have to go into windows settings > Gaming > and disable "Game Mode" for the game to launch on modern computers.
Online is dead, prepare to wait a long time between matches and fight the same two people over and over.
Grab SF6 instead.

I gave this a try since I had a previous DoA game on PS3 and I saw a review of this game that recommended it. Even though I'm not the best at fighting games, it's really fun! Plus, playing as Ryu from Ninja Gaiden is awesome!

Don’t like how you unlock costumes and it just too long for grinding out for each characters. Too many dlc just for costumes is absolutely ridiculous and also season pass prices are insane, maybe when it’s on discount for sure but I’ll pass.

Here is a game that tries to please both it's long time fans (who play for the accessibility, fun and fan service,) and the Tekken/Street Fighter/ Virtua Fighter crowds by toning down the fan service and complicating the accessibility with the four way hold system. In the end, they really should have picked one group to focus on.
From the time I was first introduced to this series (Dead or Alive 2 on the Sega Dreamcast) this series was proud of it's fan service, accessibility and just being fun to play. While DOA4 marked the shift to being more "serious" this game tries to course correct by bringing back the 3 way hold in everything but online matches. Why they didn't fully commit to it is just another case of trying to please everyone and missing the mark. It's also not as fun since they pay wall off a lot of costumes and the ones that remain tend to be palette swaps of an existing one. They process to unlock them requires earning patterns for the costumes, but since they are assigned at random, it makes it way more frustrating then it should be. At least the story is as goofy as ever and the breakaway stages are still great.
So, yeah, while this game takes a step forward, it also takes two step back. I still had fun with it and hope that if Dead or Alive 7 or a full reboot is ever made, it returns to it's roots and focuses on the big three elements that it used to pride itself on.

not a bad game but not good enough to justify this horrible DLC practice. This should have had an All-in-One pack by now and just another reason why Koei needs to revamp how they do DLC

I am not normally one to hate on DLC, but each season pass is more than the base game ever was, and there are 4 of them.
While it may be because I am playing the base game, online play is dead
Maybe I am getting old (I first played DoA2 on Dreamcast), but the combos are really tough to pull off, even in training I can barely move my hands fast enough with a controller. There is even one point in the tutorial where it tells you to "mash buttons", seriously?
Otherwise it's kinda the same old DoA, fast combat, cool moves, provocative characters. I think with a fighter game there is little you can do with this genre and they are just making it more complicated while loading it up with DLC.
It is just not worth it, I got it on sale for very cheap, and if you really want to play some DoA again sure if you catch it on a 90% off sale go for it, but steer clear of supporting the cash cow of DLC.
