I played the demo version from a PC Gamer disc back in 95. Back then this game was jaw dropping to look at compared to a lot of other games. I remember feeling like it was the pinnacle of graphics technology and there wasn't much else to go at that point. (I was a kid cut me some slack :) )
For me this is just a wonderful trip down nostalgia lane. But this will not be for everyone.
If you like on rails shooters and retro games, then give it shot. The campy cheese-ball story line and cut scenes just adds to its charm.
The level variation is nice, being that you only see a city in the screen shots. But there are levels that take place inside a computer, space, and even on a giant spaceship itself.
Heck when I found out this gem got re-released I managed to get it on sale for less than $3. For that price I don't see how you can complain.
This game is not easy, but I did find myself getting better and farther with each play through.
If you are struggling there are ways to make it easier. You can lower cpu cycles in dosbox to the point where it doesn't register you are taking damage. There are also cheat codes.
The only thing I don't like is the muffled "fire" being yelled every time an enemy is in your crosshairs. But that's just a nitpick.

n game graphics are NOT at all as good as the CDI version.
Textures are dumbed down a LOT. It keeps telling you GOOD SHOT when you shoot nothing...
The FMVs are the same, but the death animation does not shut off like a CRT, and the game cuts in weird spots, like randomly on the bridge instead of flying up to the city, (assuming because they wanted to cut the twin towers full of smoking holes out of it or something)
But it just, it's lacking.
Big time.
If you think this is going to be a good representation of what the CDI graphics were, it's not.
I will take screen shots from this DOSBOX version, and the CDI version, so you can compare them later.
I was super excited to try this on PC, but now I'm just like... That's kinda not what I wanted or expected.

Folks, do you want to experience firsthand GamePro's 1995 Philips CD-i game of the year? Look no further!
The story goes:
In the year 20XX, the Pioneer space probe containing the Earth's galactic coordinates was flung back to the planet like so much space trash by the evil TERRORNID ALIEN EMPIRE. Angered by the presumption that anyone would ever visit Earth for funsies, they make it all about business and launch an IMPOSSIBLY ENORMOUS ATTACK. Luckily, Lt. Jason M. Grayson (the M stands for Mason) is here at the sticks of his trusty PURPLE PEREGRINE extra-atmospheric attack craft to convene with what remains of Earth's resistance, including the Ultimate Lifeform, at the final fight - The Battle of Arizona.
just kidding, none of that happens. this is a super crummy rail shooter you can finish in under an hour with zero replay value. the flat shaded early 3D graphics are charming to a specific kind of nerd (me), but even those are lazy af - destroying an enemy doesn't blow them up, they just get a little smoke jpg over them while they finish their flight path. Kinda neat cutscenes that composite animation over the 3D stuff. This is not worth playing. I recommend it, but like...recommend not playing it. If you do peep the Discussions on here for a cheat code.
And remember - Lt. Jason G. Mason walks with you always soldier, his spirit become myriad in the exciting aftermath of THE BATTLE OF ARIZONA.
