I want to like this, but so far, I've seen free flashgames done better.
Let's compare this to a classic from TWENTY years ago, Tyrian, and to a free flash game called Upgrade Complete 2.
Tyrian has better graphics, far better controls, more interesting weapons, a good story with lots of humor, secret levels out the wazoo, and secret rewards for those levels. So far, this has none of those, and Tyrian is OVER TWENTY YEARS OLD.
Upgrade Complete has an easier to use ship building system, better controls, better graphics, and was FREE.
I have to take a moment to expand on the absolutely craptastic controls in this game. Half the time menus and conversation prompts don't work with a controller, so you have to switch to using the mouse. But only half the time. Sometimes they do work, so it's a constant game of set down the controller, pick up the mouse, set down the mouse, pick up the controller...
The ship in flight feels laggy and unresponsive no matter how many engines I slap on or leave off. It's a constant battle to try to slip just far enough sideways to be positioned right without overshooting.
I want to like this, but I just can't. Even on sale it's not worth it.
