Probably the best classic arcade shmup on Steam right now, with added content not found in the original arcade and Sega Saturn port. Since on PC the only alternative to play the game was on MAME or a Saturn emulator, here you'll get less input lag and correct speed. Many bugs and glitches have been sorted out. With the added English translation it will be even better.
I recommend it wholeheartedly but notice that it has some slight fanservice scenes during some character end credits or bomb animations that you may find to misrepresent the overall picture.

This is probably one of the most charming games I've played in recent years. I was sitting there playing with a big dumb smile on my face while seeing silly stuff such as the mid-90's 3D modeled Yamada sneaking in a really goofy way on the background of stage 6. Details like that, along with the artstyle and music, turn it into a must play for any fan of older videogames.
Oh and this is also one of the most forgiving shmups I've played. Although probably not as forgiving in its original Saturn/Arcade releases. Love it love it

am I happy that after taxes I payed 40 bucks for this?
not really, but this is the kind of game you don't get twice, it's truly unique, and to be able to play it with english subtitles is a dream come true, so, if you like weird old shmups, there are a bunch of nice difficulty options to slowly train yourself, and I think the humour is really well done.

Outstanding arcade classic wonderfully brought into the modern age.
Never played this in the arcades but I can see why it has endured and is popular.
Classic schmup action, awesome Japanese stylings, great port- it's all here.
An easy recommend for any arcade shmup' fan 9/10.

Cannot rebind keyboard controls. Uses WASD for movement, contrary to literally every other shmup released on PC that uses the arrow keys. Also uses V for shooting which is incredibly awkward.

Game Tengoku had quite a strange release when compared to most shmups on Steam. According to the store page it was originally released on November 29, 2017. It released in Japanese with the promise of an English localization soon to come in early 2018. It didn’t come, in fact not only did it not come they released paid DLC instead. The full release and localization finally came out approximately a full year after the games initial release. I finally caved and bought the game in October 2018 thinking the English version would never come only to have it be released shortly afterwards. As a result, my experiences are primarily with the pre-English version.
The game features two main modes. Arcade+ which is an arcade mode with online leaderboards where one can also play as DLC characters if they’ve been purchased. Aside from the main arcade mode itself, there are also two time attack stages. Classic mode is a port of the original Sega Saturn game complete with English localization. It has an arcade mode, a special story arrange mode, and time attack modes. As of writing this I’ve only played the story mode once, but I thought it was pretty cool. I’m glad they took the time to translate what I would consider to be a fairly obscure game.
There are quite a few characters and most if not all of them come from old Jaleco games. Personally the only games I knew of were Plus Alpha and City Connection. Game Tengoku CruisinMix Special does contain some information about Jaleco’s other games, but I really would like to play them. It would have been nice if they were a DLC or had a standalone collection. The main differences between the characters are the shot type, charge shot, and bomb.
I found it fairly easy to get a 1-ALL of Arcade Mode + with minimal practice once I found a character I enjoyed. The game is generous with bombs, though as far as I know there is only a single extend. The scoring system consists of chaining eggplant item pickups. It’s simple but satisfying. I didn’t go too far into the second loop but it seemed like the main feature was suicide bullets. I don’t know whether or not there is a true last boss but I do think it would be a challenge for most players to get to the end of the second loop to find out.
Overall I’ve had a lot of fun playing Game Tengoku and I’m glad that CITY CONNECTION decided to bring the game to PC. Only two pieces of criticism come to mind right now: 1.) I had issues with achievements working properly. 2.) The game does not feature a replay system. While the lack of these features isn’t ideal I still enjoyed the game enough that I’d definitely recommend this game to shmup fans. It’s a unique game and I can’t think of anything else quite like it currently available on Steam.

Never have I had so much fun with a not especially good shmup. The game has ton of charm. Enough to make up its so-so gameplay.
I was smiling from the moment I booted up the game and the opening credits were read in a cutesy voice. Followed by an adorable opening narrative of a part-time arcade employee (making 800 Yen/hour) attempting to save the video game world from a mad scientist trying to infect all video games to rule it. Or something, it's not important. Even the little catch phrases the in game characters say picking up items or being hit was cute. Though, this might quickly become annoying for some players.
Unfortunately, Tengoku Cruisin' Mix Special skews very hard into memorize it or die territory. Many enemies and bullets just move too quickly or come from behind for a player to do much but know they're coming. The bullets can easily get lost in the carnival of colors as well. The boss fights are some of the quickest I've ever played in a shoot 'em up. Even with some of them having invincibly phases. I think if a player just doesn't want to deal with a particular boss, they need only drop 3 bombs to finish them off. That's how little health these bosses have. Not that I'm complaining too much given like the rest of the game, it is more about knowing where you need to be beforehand that keeps your extends instead of weaving a path through sea of projectiles.
Which makes the game a strange hard-easy. It's pretty difficult until you know whats going to happen, but once you do; it isn't nearly as bad. And heavy memorization shooters always feel shallow to me for that reason. That said, the game makes up for it with its the more adorably sugary sweet presentation and character. And if you like that kind of thing, I whole hearty recommend this game and suggest you play through the story mode taking as many continues to see the whole thing through.

Game Tengoku CruisinMix is fast-paced, cute, funny, colorful, and nostalgic. The glimpses of Streetfighter playing in the background and the Tetris-ish blocks are nice retro touches. Rainbow colors fill in the details in the background. Adorable characters and bosses are plentiful. Bubblegum pop sets the tone but it is not distracting.
There is an arsenal of six unique anime characters that move at the same speed but each character has different fire power capabilities. During gameplay, the characters can catch bombs and powerups which adds options of mini characters to increase your fire power and spread. There are many opportunities to increase your bomb arsenal so there really is not a need to use the bombs sparingly, which is helpful. The characters are vocal in cutesy Japanese when good things happen.
The lack of strong fire power with a couple of characters is evident because of the large amount of hits needed to destroy an enemy. Sometimes it will feel like you are playing a game of chicken or dodge ball with the enemies as they plummet towards you.
Sometimes I have difficulty seeing the bullets especially in the Level 4 clouds. I also seem to have a glitch, like a slight pause when it should be seamless, while fighting the Level 2 Teddy Bear. It would be nice to see replays and additional leaderboards for different levels of difficulty. Also, an online co-op would be fun.

I like this game a lot. It's fun, it has a variety of game modes, it looks and sounds good and it has zero input lag.
However...
- No keyboard button remapping. The default buttons are unfavorable. I am willing to overlook this because I have recently discovered that my keyboard driver lets me change the buttons to my liking.
-The leaderboard has no information about the stage you lost at, just a name and a score. Which means that I can't boast about a 1all or a 2all to anyone.
-The "Whomp 'Em" achievement "Defeat the Yamada Virus without continuing" did not unlock after I did a 1ALL of arcade+.
-Although it sounds good there are slight pops when explosions happen, but that's quite insignificant.
-The big kicker: the game FREEZES, a lot! At first I was able to pause then unpause to make it move again. Then the big freezes started happening, the ones where your screen becomes black after beating a boss and you just hope something will happen, but nothing ever does. Or the ones where you game over, the continue option never shows up, you watch the boss time out, then the screen becomes black forever. Because of this I am unable to finish runs, I am unable to play the game.
Buy at your own risk.

Game Tengoku is a wonderful cute em up port of the game released for Saturn in 1997. Controls are manual shot (with a charge shot if held down), autofire, bomb, and display or hide score (Saturn only). Ships all move at the same speed but have different shots, and the game has no slowdown button.
Positives:
+ Solid 60 fps
+ Arcade Mode has 6 levels with a 2nd loop; 2nd loop adds suicide bullets
+ Saturn Mode has 8 levels: adds Karaoke and Console level
+ Leaderboards for each character
+ Time attack
+ 5 Difficulties
+ Varied levels; No problem in this game of level 1 miltary base , level 2 military base, level 3 military base, etc.
+ Autofire = Happy hands
+ Achievements
+ music
+ voices
+ If you buy japanese version now, then game will add an English patch for free when it releases
+ 2d Sprites
+ Eggplants
Negatives:
- Leaderboards are buggy
- No Replays
- Local leaderboards show the same highscore for every character and difficulty; ex. Momo 10k points high score earned in very easy will show as the high score while playing Jeynus very hard
- Leaderboards only for arcade normal difficulty (and time attack); please add leaderboards for every difficulty
- No leaderboards for Saturn Mode
- Score isn't saved if you continue; have to quit to record score locally and online
- Leaderboard doesn't show what level a person died; Ex 12740891273:::: 1-6 or 12740891273:::: 2-4
- No resolution settings
- No Tate (horizontal rotation) mode; only the Saturn mode has tate in one direction that my monitor doesn't rotate; also Ratios can't be changed; Arcade mode has no tate option.
- Saturn mode stretches screen horizontally messing up ratios; arcade doesn't have this problem
- No co-op in saturn mode; original game didn't have this either but it would be nice to add
- No practice mode for 2nd loop levels. Game only lets you practice 1st loop levels.
- 3d looks bad
- Only one in game background
- Acheivements could be better;; Please add acheivements for a 1cc 2-all clear for each difficulty.
Neutral:
~ 2 DLC characters: I wish they would increase the price of the game and sell a complete package.
~ I want English version to have subtitles and voice dub.
~ Alt-Enter to Fullscreen
~ No online co-op; Barely any shmups have this feature but it would be nice.
~ I don't have this problem but if you are having controller compatibility issues get x360ce.
