The game functions and the systems at play are alright, if simple, but their are two chapters mid game in succession that can only be described as catastrophic, to an extent where at some points it wraps back around to being so bad it's entertaining. Worth the asking price as an odd, bad, sometimes frustrating but functional JRPG.

REAL STAR OCEAN HEAD SPEAKING HERE THIS GAME IS PEAK TRI ACE NEVER MISSES LET THIS BE KNOWN...... Many vile wretched beings will imminently write this game off because it is a bit jarring to the average consumer. This game came out at a time when hyper realism was the thing and bloom was the only thing you could see. Hyper realistic anime is such an underappreciated style that not many games do and they did a really good job. All of the models are really high detailed with amazing textures and the motion capture is still amazing. The acting is good if you like English dubs except the main character is a nobody twat. Please play in Japanese for actually good acting The cast of characters are really great and the story is pretty much the same as the others but is still as equally rewarding. Combat is simple but has so much depth and has been greatly expanded in this entry. Exploration is more fun because you can dash and all of the locations are visually interesting. Includes many quality of life features and includes a sort of hidden character disposition feature to unlock character specific endings. Inventing items is much simpler and dont need to do stupid things to recruit random npcs. The end game is awesome and has a lot of replayability. Theres a ton of collectibles if you like getting achievements. This is a really good remaster with anime portraits but is not a great port. Going through all in all, THIS GAME RULES I wasted my time writing this because I love Star Ocean

Really enjoying this one. Intricate battle system with a lot of depth. Some bosses are crazy. Contrary to what seems to be the norm, I thought most of the characters were goofy but charming. They can't all be winners though - delete Welch from the game and I guarantee we'll see 80% positive reviews by 2026

I recently put in 60+ hours into Star Ocean 2 R, and enjoy it greatly. Remind me of why I enjoy the game in the ps1 era, now I want to retry Star Ocean 4, since I put in about 2 hours in the xbox 360. But man, I hate this game, the game awful level design, terrible character dialogue, annoying characters. I can't stand it, worse Star Ocean I ever played and I regret wasting six dollars.
