This game makes for a decently fun experience and doesn't overstay its welcome. I think what I enjoyed most was the immersion and atmosphere built up by the little things like visor wipers, the helmet voice filters, and even the screen shake (though that took some getting used to).

Really good story and good action for a 20 year old game, the menu mouse sensitivity is super high but overall really good, too bad Sev had to die at the end >:(. Very much worth 10 bucks

20 years old game, still playable with excitement. Story, music, controls, just amazing. 10/10. Even not for a Star Wars fan.

I've loved this game for a long time. I played it for hours on end as a kid on my OG Xbox. Now that "clanker" is apparently a slur I felt the need to come back to the classic game the term originated from..... can't wait to see this game cancelled due to media overreactions to a joke about robots (a joke which admittedly some have taken a little far, but is otherwise funny)

I will start by saying most of my Republic Commando time was played on the straight PC install, not Steam, so my time on it here isn't particularly impressive. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time playing this game. Specifically the Kashyyyk levels.
Star Wars has had a few great games, and a LOT of mediocre ones. Republic Commando is not on that list of mediocres. This is the game all single player squad oriented FPS games should strive for.
Tactics are needed for the harder fights. Placing your teammates behind cover and in particular positions will make or break your experience here.
I strongly recommend this game for Star Wars fans, especially those that prefer the Wars part of Star Wars, over the glowsticking parts.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is one of the most underrated gems in the galaxy far, far away. Released in 2005, it dares to step away from the lightsabers and Jedi-centric storytelling to offer something grittier, grounded, and militaristic. You play as Delta-38 (aka “Boss”), the leader of an elite four-man clone commando squad during the Clone Wars. The game is a tactical first-person shooter that blends intense squad-based combat with surprisingly mature storytelling and immersive atmosphere.
The Good:
✔ Squad Command System
The heart of Republic Commando lies in its streamlined but effective squad control. With a single button, you can order your brothers — Fixer, Sev, and Scorch — to breach doors, snipe targets, or set explosives. The AI is sharp for its time, making squad gameplay fluid and satisfying.
✔ Atmosphere and Audio
This isn’t the glossy Star Wars of the Jedi Temple — it’s the mud, blood, and metal of the battlefield. The darker tone is reinforced by gritty visuals and a brooding soundtrack. The heavy use of helmet HUD effects and radio chatter adds to the immersion. The standout? The soundtrack mixes ominous chants with percussive intensity — it feels like Halo meets Star Wars.
✔ Characterization
Despite never seeing their faces, each squad member has a distinct personality. Scorch is the comic relief, Sev the stoic killer, and Fixer the professional. Their banter keeps you connected to them, and by the end, you care about their fate — rare for an FPS, especially in 2005.
✔ Enemy Variety and Combat Design
From Trandoshan slavers to Geonosian elites and droid armies, the enemies keep combat varied. Each encounter requires a slightly different tactic — brute force won’t always cut it.
The Not-So-Good:
✘ Short Campaign
The game clocks in at around 6–8 hours. While it's a tightly paced experience, it ends just when it feels like it's truly hitting its stride.
✘ Lack of Multiplayer Depth
The multiplayer mode felt tacked on, lacking the polish or draw of contemporaries like Halo 2 or Battlefield 2. The game clearly shines in single-player.
✘ No Sequel
It’s not a flaw of the game itself, but Republic Commando ends with a bittersweet cliffhanger that never got resolved. Fans have been waiting 20 years.
Verdict:
Republic Commando remains a cult classic — a bold experiment that showed Star Wars could succeed outside the traditional Jedi narrative. Its tactical gameplay, engaging squadmates, and gritty Clone Wars setting made it feel more like Band of Brothers in space than another space opera.
If you’re a fan of Star Wars, tactical shooters, or military sci-fi, this game is still absolutely worth your time.

Republic Commando – Archived. Tried to get it running on PC but even with all the Steam forum tricks and Google rabbit holes, it just wouldn’t behave. Everything was janky, broken, or both.
That said, I still remember playing it back on Xbox — and it deserves to be remembered. Tactical, gritty, and surprisingly grounded for a Star Wars game, it nailed that boots-on-the-ground squad feel better than most.
It never got the credit it should have, and honestly, we need more Star Wars games like this. Focused, immersive, and built around something other than lightsabers and skywalkers.

Took me 10 hours to play through the storyline. I can't believe I never played this when I was younger! the mechanics for combat and troop control are very robust for a game this old. 10/10

This game was (is) quintessential Star Wars for me when it first came out.
Think of the time it was first released and realize what we knew about Attack of the Clones in that moment. No animated shows or movies, just pure theatrical Star Wars. This embodied everything you wanted in the IP and it did it without you playing as a Force-sensitive. You had the massive battles that could and would turn the tide of the war, you got a gritty FPS that focused more on the individual foot-soldier than any other game before it (in a SW sense at least), and you suffered defeat even when you won.
From a game-play perspective, the controls and loop itself are incredibly refined. The best part of this was getting to assign actions to your teammates while you continued to blast away at some droids, which is what you wanted to do because your squad was infinitely better at specific actions than you could ever hope to be. Putting Sev on sniper duty, while Scorch primes a demolition kit and Fixer mans a downed LAAT turret made you feel as if you were in charge of one of the deadliest weapons in the Republic's kit.
The only nitpick I have (which isn't even a nitpick necessarily because it made sense to have this sort of change for a sequel) is I wish I had the ability to assign teammates to their preferred roles that would reward me in the middle of a battle. Example: Sev is presented as a crack shot, Scorch loves explosives, and Fixer likes techy things (slicing, hacking, droids, etc.). Therefore, it makes sense to have Sev on a sniping post where he gets a boost to accuracy and reloading compared to the other two. Where it would take me 20 seconds to lay down an explosive kit, Scorch could get it done in half the time. Perhaps Fixer smoothly cracks a terminal while the rest of us stumble over what buttons to press.
Something like that would've cemented this as the perfect Star Wars game, but even without it this is a solid 9/10 and has legitimate claims for a 10/10 in my mind. I played this religiously back when it first came out for the Xbox, and just as much on my first laptop and even now with my current computer after I stopped using a CD drive (I still have both my physical copies of this game).
You don't purchase this for the graphics, you purchase it for the challenge and the story itself, as short as it is. The second mission on the Acclamator-class frigate is by far my favorite level of any videogame, ever. Starting off as a mystery with horror vibes, turning into a rescue mission, pivoting to a cleanup operation, and ending with a last stand was a mastery of level design.
There is beauty in simplicity, and this game didn't need you to become a person with god-like powers to enjoy it. You just need a modifiable blaster and three squadmates who can rain down destruction on your command.
Get this and see what you missed out on when games were not live-service or multiplayer focused.

easily one of the greatest star wars games, crazy amounts of ambition and passion were clearly poured into the making of this game, too bad we will never see a sequel.
