Switched to PES over FIFA after almost a decade of only exclusively playing EA's "football simulator". It got to a point when every session of FIFA would end up in more frustration and anger than happiness; all the bugs, scripting, and uncontrollable elements playing against the FIFA AI simply don't make playing that game worth it.
PES has its flaws. It generates its own frustrations, it doesn't have most teams' licenses, and there is still much room for imporvement, but I am so glad for my own sanity that I switched to PES. As long as Konami is willing to keep improving Master League, adding features and finetuning things like the Youth Academy (that, admittedly, makes no sense in its current iteration - Barcelona has the exact same academy with the exact same players as, say, Accrington Stanley), and I'll probably never switch back to the cesspit that is FIFA and its Ultimate Team madness.

The game is splendid. The gameplay is the best till date. The graphics are amazing. Players look great, way better than FIFA. The lighting and the pitch need work. Fox engine is capable enough to pull that off.
Now, the part that acts as the thorn in the flesh: ONLINE IS PATHETIC to say the least. The gameplay is compeletly different, with the AI acting extremely dumb, passes don't feel as crisp as offline. INPUT LAG IS GAMEBREAKING. EVEN THE DIRECTIONAL LEFT ANALOG STICK LAGS making players move after a second of command.
For offline, its the best soccer game ever made. The online part is the deal breaker. Its not the same as offline. Feels like a completely different game.
Only recommended for offline play.

I'm tired of people giving bad reviews because the online part of the game is not yet released, it will come, guys.. Come on, judge the game or wait a little longer before giving a review.
The game is excellent, it's fluid, agile, realistic. The difficulty is great, smart, it adapts mid game depending on how you play. I was a FIFA player since 2010 (before I always played PES). Last year I bought the PC version of PES 2017 and I loved the gameplay, even though the graphics were a lesser version of the PS4... But now, we received the same product and they gave us the best football experience so far.
So please, wait a little longer before giving a bad review to say "online won't work"..."it's not a finished product"... "Refunded, no online".. Please, refund and go play FIFA, get your ass ripped off with microtransactions and scripted gameplay and don't come back!

Could have been a good game besides slim licensing but:
Gameplay on relevant difficulty levels (the two highest) is a shame for the PES series.
The AI is always one step ahead and uses very silly passing routes on the edge of physical possibilities.
Your own players become mentally impared, even good players stumble upon their feet several times in one run.
Most games are like getting an early ridiculous goal for the AI, followed by much non-sense passing and almost always the same type of passing routes no matter which team you face. A mix of no-look Tiki-Taka and a precise diagonal hail mary which drops like a balloon. In the end, it's a lot of grinding in the midfield to compensate for the disadvantage in speed and reaction time.
More annoying stuff: it seems that all the effort for creating atmosphere was put into presentation of some licensed clubs. I can't stand those Liverpool or BVB intros anymore when they describe their stadion with one uninspired sentence
Form updates only come for "big players", the game only focuses on "big clubs".
Summary: football is draining from PES, games against the AI remain a joyless piece of work.
Interim Update:
Senseless passing is also very common in online matches, but only if you can find an opponent in the modus you want to play. There seem to be too many different online modes which leads to fewer possible matches for match making.
Most annoying point of all: the dlc policy. I can't use the tactic I want to use in myClub because I can only buy it for extra real money (via a good trainer being not available for GP) or it does not even exist in that mode. Same thing for Neymar, but I need a trainer that has enough what-so-ever-they-called-it-skill (not available via GP).
R.I.P. Update:
And after more than 10 years of playing every PES title, PES 2018 is a gravestone for my enthusiasm of what one may expect from Konami. There is no thinkable graphic improvement that could compensate for the BS that the gameplay has become. I've even reinstalled PES 2017 to compare what old BS was in there (dlc/micro transactions and trainer system in myClub), but the game control wasn't BS. Online matches may be ok, but the percentage of non-DJT players is small. What does that stand for? DJTs think that you can ruin the whole system as long as you can profit yourself. For PES 2018, lagger (instrumental reduction of bandwith) and (lag) quitter are very common, followed by early time wasting "champions". Many online players enjoy abusing the game mechanics by scoring mainly/ only goals in ways that have nothing to do with football but which are all about exploiting non-sense glichtes, control deficits and connection inequalities (well, that is not new in 2018).
To sum things up, this game deserves at least multiple negative reviews.

AI in higher difficulties is awful...you can stop playing around 65th - 70th minute because it doesn't matter which team you play against...they all will start playing like barcelona in their best years...just frustrating to this point!

It has been long overdue, but finally, the game is equivalent to the NextGen. :)
Pros:
- Graphically it looks much more pleasing to the eyes.
- Ball physics are amazingly good.
- Gameplay is extremely fluid.
- Master League and MyClub are addictive.
- UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa league are amazing to have!
Cons:
- Game commentators can get pretty boring as they become predictable after you play more than 20 matches.
- In-game soundtracks are nice but there are too little of them. (Maybe we should be allowed to add our own music just like PES 2009).
- There are no German leagues (Bundesliga).
- Limited pool to choose from when it comes to boots customization.

I think PES also needs a Workshop, so people stop making bullshit YouTube video's about updating teams and players.
And we can just easily download it in the game by Steam!

Physics wise it's the best PES. Goalkeeper wise, it also happens to be the best. Animations are also amazing.
But it's all ruined due to an inconsistent difficulty option and extremely obvious scripting, which becomes worse when playing with mediocre 2nd division teams. The oposing players are always stronger, faster, more accurate and do better teamwork than your players even if their stats are worse. My fastest player is Lynden Gooch with 90 speed rating while also being in top form and he couldn't catch another player who had a 75 speed rating and ALSO had the ball.
Also, whenever you score, it is as if the AI goes to the next difficulty setting, which is terrible. Your may be dominating your enemy, but after you score a goal, they exchange a series of one touch passes and score an equalizer. Also, your team becomes worse. My best middlefielder who played excelent the entire first half, suddenly misses a header even though the ball was going terribly slow and passed right next to him. This didn't happn once. One game it may be my middlefielder, it may be my defender, it could be both of them. It happens every single game and only after I score. Every single game.
It has gotten to the point where this game is not enjoyable. Heck, I could even say it is infuriating because you know that once you score a goal, the enemy 2nd division team plays like Barca, and there is nothing you can do about it.
A number of other issues:
-Defenders don't mark properly. They leave too much space and often run away from the ball(!!!)
-Annoying transfers in Master League (Manager Career). Liverpool literally gave away all their good players and bought some randoms.
-All teams play the same. Counter attack and nearly perfect short passes. Even the worst 2nd division teams play like that.
I was really hoping for something better, since my last PES was 2012 and 2013, but the improvement is only graphical. Gameplay is a joke. Save your money for next year's game.
(EDIT - Extra Issues)
-Terrible foul system/tackle system. Your tackles are 90% of the time an instant yellow card.
-Perfect opponent tackling - Always inch perfect accurate tackles and never a foul.
