Remnith Reviews

Remnith is a chaotic arcade style VR shooter where enemy units feed off of the energy of every shot that isn't lodged directly into them. The more you miss the stronger they get.

3/10 Reasonable for the price, but a little dull. Guns don't feel powerful enough and enemies are all the same. Shoot them, watch a wall fall over, shoot another similar one, watch a similar wall fall over. Zzzzzzzzzz.

Oh boy. Not fun. I played the desktop version, and oh boy. I found it so incredibly unfun right off the bat. The aiming feels wonky (maybe it's the mouse acceleration? No setting for it, and I think playing shooters on a controllers is silly), the environments are cluttered and hard to navigate, the enemies are hard to spot - too much visual noise which is uniform in colour! The "pillar fall" sound is incredibly confusing and doesn't sound good. The shooting feels pretty lame (no juice), it's hard to even tell if you hit the enemy (which is crucial in this game). The visuals are meh but that's fine for an indie production, although I'm sure with better lighting and shaders the game could look actually good. My main gripe is: fighting does not feel good. I'm sorry, dev, I cannot see if you delivered on the promise of evolving enemies if the basic ones are just such a chore to fight. There's nothing to keep me "hooked". Oh, and to make things a bit more light-hearted at the end, at first I thought my gun is an enemy and I panicked a bit as I couldn't shoot it (WEAPON LOCKED). Death to AAA gaming. Take this loss and grow, dev. If you're not the dev, I suggest only buying this game if you're interested in experimental but unrefined experiences, or maybe if you have a VR headset (which this game could possibly be much, much better on).

Finished this just now. This is a crazy good game if you like arcade shooters, and it really plays with the scale of VR.

Pretty disappointing, the gun hovers in front of you, it aimes where you point like you're showing it where to shoot. The levels all look the same. Enemies are big, few and uninteresting. The weapon upgrades are more barrels but they point beside eachother making your weapon less precise, so unless you are close enough to the enemy you will miss with the extra barrels which is counter productive in this game. Over all though just isn't fun to play.

[th]
Aim True Ye Vengeful - A Lesson On FPS Trigger Discipline
[/th]

Released in 2017, Remnith is a singleplayer-only, first person shooter created and published by Cronish Games. While sporting a great audiovisual setting and promising concept, my excitement for the game fell flat just after a couple of minutes. Initially, the idea draws you in and challenges you to test your skills in battle. But once you're past half of the second segment, you've seen it all. Once you have adjusted to the new rules, which happens fairly quickly due to their rigidity, you will breeze through the rest of the game. On lower difficulties a recovery from too many missed shots is still possible when compared to higher difficulties where it seems more sane to just restart from the latest checkpoint as there is an incredible spike in difficulty. The shortness of the overall game, the lacking variety of enemy types and player weapons, thoughtless difficulty enforcement, frustrating enemy attack patterns, lacking replayability and tacky lore are all very disappointing. Remnith feels like a good idea in concept that left the drawing board way too soon. Given that bugs, glitches and spelling errors still exist to this day, the game screams "early access" from every angle. Form over function is not going to cut it for me.

Unfortunately I couldn't get this game to work. --- UPDATE: I took another look at this game after the Developer response, and I went through the startup instructions more carefully. The controllers don't work the way I was expecting, but now that I understand that, it's playable, and fun. Just read through the many instruction screens a little more carefully than I did.
