Good collection of some of the best NES classics! I absolute recommend it for those who want to relive their childhood. For everyone else; yes, but only if you like these old style games and don't have too high expectations. Remember that these games was good for it's time, but of course they can't compete with todays standards. They are very short, generally simplistic and lacks depth. Now that's been said, there isn't many if any other pure Nintendo games on Steam, except MegaMan. So, having this collection on Steam is simply amazing. I still don't think it's worth its full price, though. I say get it when it's on sale! After beating all the games, except TaleSpin, I can quickly sum them up like this: - DuckTales and DuckTales 2: Both are good. - Chip 'n Dale and Chip 'n Dale 2: Also both good, but the first one is slightly better IMO. - Darkwing Duck: OK, but the lesser good in this collection. Can be a bit frustrating. - TaleSpin: Trash! I don't think it's even worth playing. The handling and the game mechanic is so bad! Combine this with levels and boss battles that are pure frustration. It's not fun. Now, let's address some of the worries I had before buying this and my now experience with the games: - Performance: It's true that the games does suffer a bit from slowdowns and poor optimization, but only small parts are affected. Even on it's worst it was still playable. Performance was good for most of the time. - Controller support: Only Xbox controller is supported. However, you can use a PS4 controller by enabling Steam's controller input. It works perfectly and there's an official controller layout available. Might also work with other controllers too, if it's supported by Steam. Just have in mind that when the game says press A or B, these might correspond to other buttons on your specific controller. - Controls/Handling: Controls are pretty good. Maybe they're not be razor sharp, but I didn't notice any sluggish or unresponsive handling. Just be aware that some of these games require fast button presses, so it might be you and not the controls itself. - Stability: No crashes, not a single one! - Aspect ratio: All games are 4:3 aspect ratio, so naturally there will be black bars on the sides. I preferred playing with the screen set to FULL, which is 4:3 but with the games art work on the sides instead of just black borders. It makes them a bit less noticeable. If the aspect ratio really bothers you, then you can set it to widescreen which will stretch the image, but I wouldn't recommend it. - DRM: I thought it used Enigma, well it doesn't. Which is a good thing! I also want to mention the amazing rewind feature. If you're on the fence of buying this collection, then know that this feature alone makes it well worth it! It's so easy and smooth to use. Your gameplay rewind in real-time when you hold down the button and it's very precise. No save function can ever beat this! Of course you need to manually save if you want to quit the game and continue it later, but you don't need to worry about saving in the middle of the stages.
A Fun Blast from the Past!
The Disney Afternoon Collection is a fantastic way to experience some classic retro platformers, whether you're a veteran or a newcomer. Each game is fun in its own right, and the added modes, like Time Attack and especially Boss Rush, provided an extra layer of challenge that kept me engaged for longer. Plenty of bonus content, art, music, etc. The rewind feature makes these games much more accessible, but don’t be fooled—they still offer a decent challenge! While the full collection isn’t particularly long (I finished everything in about 4.5 hours), every moment was enjoyable. If you love classic platformers or have nostalgia for these titles, this is well worth picking up, especially on sale.
