If you like Japanese culture and are a little bit familiar with the early Edo Period then you will love this game. Main hurdle would be the difficulty but if you can overcome that then this is a peak game.

Came back to this game after playing a lot of other Souls-likes and Elden ring. the control convention is different to most others but it doesn't take long to get used to it. That said, I'm a lot better at this game before playing other souls likes. It's got some great features and I particularly love the stances and unlocking all the special moves for different weapon and skill disciplines.
Genuinley, this is a great game and you should try it if you haven't. I do wonder how Nioh 2 compares to this one? If it builds in new mechanics It can only be even better, allegedly.

While the story feels painfully generic and uninspired, the core gameplay redeems it. Quite complex combat system, demanding boss encounters, and a deep well of build variety that keeps the experience genuinely engaging.

It's Ninja Gaiden meets Dark Souls, and it is VERY difficult. It gives you an entire arsenal, and it's up to you to figure out how you go about using it. I hated the game for a majority of my playtime, but there was a brief moment (90 hours in) where I realized it may actually be a masterpiece.
Buy it on sale (do not pay $50 for Nioh 1 when it goes on sale for like $5) and give it a try. You'll either love it or hate it, but you'll definitely know by the refund window. I'm leaving this review and continuing my journey in Nioh 2!

I can't believe I slept on this game for years.
REALLY difficult compared to other souls games. It's much more punishing of mistakes especially in the early game when you're still learning the mechanics and the game expects you to learn them from the get-go.
But despite that, the combat is very satisfying. I think it's one of the best out there due to numerous tools and builds you can experiment with.
Its basically Ninja Gaiden + Diablo + Dark Souls. A masocore ARPG lol

*Masocore
*Ninja Gaiden-like
*Nioh's development took 12 years, scrapped and remade 3 times til it met Kou Shibusawa's vision (from Koei~reassigned to Omega Force~then Team Ninja)
play time - 794hrs (offline)
What i didn't like:
- savepoints that are far from bosses
- walls, roof, objects that block my view during battle
- camera/ target switching when up against multiple enemies or dual boss fight
One word to describe this game ~RAGE~
it was an Unforgettable yet painful experience but nothing feels so rewarding than to Conquer WOTN & the 999 floors Abyss
Sure takes time to learn the combat techniques but when i did, i Couldn't stop playing
More approachable than you might think!
TL;DR Nioh has a ton of systems in place to get you through the initial onboarding. The payoff is incredibly rewarding with a top tier gameplay experience that was a joy to run through.
Nioh sat in my backlog for far too long and I'm so glad I finally gave it a shot. As you know, it's a soulslike game at its core, but Nioh manages to successfully carve its own space in the genre in a multitude of ways.
Firstly, the game was way more arcadey than I was expecting - you pick levels on a mission select screen, you whizz round fairly small areas killing everything in sight and you level a multitude of gauges (from your blacksmith to your clan). I'm a sucker for progress bars so having something to always dump my Amrita (experience points) into really scratched an itch.
There is also a TON of loot in this game. I had no idea it was similar to Diablo or POE with rarities, affixes and armour sets. There's also crafting and enhancing through systems like Tempering and Soul Matching and while I was able to get 100% without experimenting too much, it was a fun process to learn and vital if you want to get super far in the Abyss (endgame).
But the thing that hooked me the most with Nioh, was its combat. Combat is a pure joy, deceptively simple at first, starting off with just a light and heavy attack, I soon came to realise the importance of Ki Pulsing. It is a stamina recovery method that the whole loop centres around and once understood, the game really opens up. There was nothing better than dancing around enemies, slashing them to pieces while performing weapon combos and keeping my stamina up. Every weapon was diverse and invited new playstyles which I found very impressive, it's a shame you can only equip two weapon types as I'd be hard pressed to narrow down my favourites.
You also have your ace in the hole which is your 'Living Weapon'. Charged via Amrita this is your "go nuts" mode you can use to decimate bosses or tricky enemies, and if you're able to not get hit you can keep it going for a really long time with the appropriate buffs, so I never really found myself stuck on a boss for too long.
There's a story, sure, and it's quite vast and epic but it's not likely to stick with you. Honestly, I'd be hard pressed to name some of the characters beyond William and Hanzo, but it's all really just a backdrop for slaughtering these hoards of demons anyway.

The more you play the more you realize how deep this game goes. Finishing the campaign is just the start of the game. This is one of the most frustrating soulslikes, it's far more ninja gaiden than dark souls. You will constantly be one-shot, and most challenges will be overcome when you put in 100% of your focus. That's also the most satisfying part. Clearing through mobs and bosses feels good. Building and refining your gear feels good. This has brilliant and complex gear and skill systems which makes it stand out from other souls games. I can't believe there are two more games in the series I get to play after this.
