Can't even get to the main menu.
I bought this because it was dirt cheap and forgot about it for a couple of weeks. Finally got around to trying it out, and while the game launches without issue, there's no way to get from the attract mode to the main menu. I tried literally every key on the keyboard, both quick press and long press, but the only thing I could do is quit to desktop.
I checked the discussions and other reviews, and the general consensus was that pressing Z gets to the main menu. Doesn't work on my machine at all, and I tried quitting/restarting several times. Even used a different keyboard just in case that worked for some crazy reason.
I don't like reviews that that list only negatives, so in that spirit there are two positive things I can say about Assault Suit Leynos:
1) The attract mode is genuinely pretty cool, and hits all the 16-bit queues.
2) Reading the reviews while looking for a fix turned me on to Gigantic Army, which is an actually functional game that scratches the retro-style, side-scrolling, giant robot game itch.
Tried to get a refund just out of principle, but since it had been just over 2 weeks since I'd bought it Steam refused. So instead I'm writing this review. I got this game for like a buck and a quarter, and that was 2 dollars more than it's worth.

This is a remake of the classic Assault Suit Leynos
It's a great old-school side-scrolling mecha game, remade and updated with new graphics that still retain the spirit of the original game.
It even has voice acting and art gallery if you're a fan of the original game.
Although it is a bit short, there is a score attack mode and you can also unlock new weapons by scoring cumulative points on your multiple runs. Also, its fun to see how saving certain npcs or letting them die changes some of the dialogues.
