Songs for a Hero is a generic platformer that is a waste of time and misuses its one gimmick.
The gameplay is very simplistic to start: Jump, swing sword, and use shield to block. There are 9 worlds consisting of typically 3 levels plus a boss. You gain some new powerup for worlds 1-7 such as charging up to shoot a fireball from your sword, invisibility, swimming, dash, etc. You have lives in this, but enemies, environments and bosses are so non-challenging that you'll rarely die unless you're searching for secrets and get insta-killed in some manner. I had 40+ by the end.
The main gimmick of the hero singing to what you're doing is exaggerated, overdone and not utilized properly. By the time you finish the first world, the singing will mostly be background noise that you'll barely pay attention to while you're platforming or fighting. Most of the time the music is about 1 of 3 things: Something about the current environment of the world you're in, seeing a new enemy for the first time, or something about finding the princess. Typically, the only times the music will be about something you're doing is if some enemy hits you or you land on spikes/environmental object, The music should have been done in a humorous way but most of the time is not. The lyrics are pretty bad and I don't think I laughed a single time while listening. It would've also helped to find a better singer.
There's not too much to complain about other than how generic this all is. You've done all these things in much better games that were far more challenging and rewarding. Of annoyance, there were two spots during the game where there were secrets I could go get but a cutscene triggered and then during the cutscene the hero decides to jump down a pit that there is now no way to go backwards from. One is right after getting the swimming ability which means you'd be forced to replay the level if you want to go swim through the water segments prior to that to get whatever was hidden there.
To further add to the complete lack of challenge and is insulting to the player is that every single level is covered in signs pointing in the direction you're supposed to go or with a skull and crossbones over a pit indicating not to jump into it. Why? Do the makers of this think this is the first platforming game made in the history of videogames and that players will have no idea what to do if there aren't signs everywhere indicating where to go? Was this game made for mentally r3tard3d people? There will be spots with a sign with a down arrow on it right before a ledge and you can clearly see the platform below on your screen and there's no where else to go.
Songs for a Hero is a mediocre generic non-challenging platformer with a wasted and often annoying gimmick.

I'm flabbergasted, this game is WAY MUCH BETTER than i expected. The songs are too good, fun story, real fun gameplay and it's retro looks give a good nostalgia. Come on non-brazilians, give it a try, the english translation is AMAZING, i'll have to replay this in english later just to listen to it.
