I had a blast during what will likely be my final ever play-through of BG1 and TSC, this time finishing off with SoD. Each time has been a formative experience, although this last one has been a highlight for me personally.

Poor writing, feels like I'm playing a censored HR safe Baldur's gate, & the changes to OG characters where unnecessary.

Whoever made this DLC has never heard of difficulty scaling, they think it's the height of artistic genius to make half the encounters next to impossible to win. Right now I'm stuck on a late game trap they set up. If you leave the camp and go anywhere at all you fall into this ambush where magic doesn't work, potions and wands don't work, and one of the mercenaries has a poison that's almost guaranteed perma death for one of your characters. I cheated and started this game with four min/maxed characters I leveled up in The Black Pits and I still had to turn the difficulty down to get past it. Plus the characters often stop fighting just as soon as their closest opponent is down. That happened some in the base game but it seems to be a much bigger problem in the DLC. You're constantly surrounded by baddies hitting your characters and your characters are just standing there, twiddling their thumbs and doing nothing about it. This is a huge problem in this DLC, since half the encounters are so crowded you can't really see what your characters are doing

Honestly it's a great expansion for bg1 and I genuinely don't get people who were upset with it. It was my first time playing it now in 2025, and it was a pleasant experience throughout. A nice jump in terms of polish from the base game to something more modern, all while preserving your favorite characters and providing some very satisfying new content that expands on both games. And it's been recently made cheaper - more than worth the money imho.

I regret I didnt play this sooner. Siege of Dragonspear was actually pretty fun; encounters felt epic and the story wasnt as bad as some folks online said it was. I found the kitbashed elements from the other infinity engine games to be quite cute and there are still a number of new things, dungeons items and enemies. Companions actually have a bit of an arc which is welcome, as they are glorifed RTS units in the first game. There are large scale battles and it actually reminds me much more of Icewind Dale 2 than a BG game as its on rails with only a few side paths for optional quests. It makes me wish Beamdog made a new original game in the engine as the awkward parts are where it tries to fit between BG 1 and 2. It worked very well as an expansion for BG1 but it doesnt quite fit with how it leads into Shadows of Amn.

Its not very good in terms of writing or gameplay in comparison to BG 1 and 2. If you feel the need to finish a collection then sure, get it.. But just know that its essentially a click and kill simulator with how poorly designed it is and there is very little challenge to it. The story itself is really shallow and uninteresting. Game breaking bugs that were introduced on release still exist and the ability to complete a playthrough is entirely decided on if your game decides it hates you or not.
