Great game, godawful DotEmu emulation. D yourself a favor and play literally any other version of Metal Slug than this one.

I've never played an SNK game. Sue me. I've played a couple of run and gunner's here and there and always enjoyed them, so I figured I'd grab a friend and try out one of their most iconic games – Metal Slug.
Being an arcade game, this game doesn't really have a story. The moment you start, you parachute right into a battlefield and you're off to the races. The thing that stood out to me immediately is the absolutely gorgeous pixel art. The game is oozing charm with its presentation, featuring plenty of fun visual gags, varied environments, and smooth animations.
The game is simple, only relying on two buttons and a dpad. You can fire vertically and horizontally, lob grenades and jump. The variety comes in the form of various weapon pickups and special vehicles you'll encounter as you play. These change your gun from a standard pistol to a heavy machine gun, let you drive a tank, or allow you to pilot a turret that chews through ads and bosses alike.
Well I make it sound a lot easier than it is, because in reality you die in one hit, and the game throws hundreds of enemies projectiles at you. At first it feels overwhelming, but slowly you start to learn more about the game that helps you cope – like how you can bounce on tanks while aiming down à la Ducktales, or how you can melee nearby opponents to conserve special ammo.
My friend and I played with unlimited continues as we had no illusions about our skill level. What we weren't expecting was how incredibly fun the game is – it only took us an hour to beat, but we had such a blast we immediately replayed it, this time with continues limited to 20 (baby steps, okay?). I can probably count the number of games I immediately replayed after finishing on one hand.
What started off as a game we chose to play on a complete whim ended up completely wowing us. It's just a good, arcadey coin-muncher. It's nice to sit back and have a concentrated dose of fun with a game like Metal Slug every now and then.

A classic arcade shooter worth owning. Thought it would be best to include it with 2 & 3 so you can get a scope of how the series progressed. ALso minor grip the emulation is a bit ruff. Also the game is not steam deck compatible at time of writing.
