Oriental Empires is a solid, creative, and challenging 4X in the vein of Civilization 5/6, specializing in ancient to medieval Asia, from village to vast empire! While initially it may appear to just be a Civ total-overhaul mod, as your empire develops the gameplay slowly and steadily opens up like a Black Lotus (word to MTG XD ), growing in challenge and beauty with each petal.
e.g. as your population and tech grows, inter-city trade grows more demanding both laterally (in variety of goods) and vertically (in amount). To satisfy this demand, you can create distinct city groups that specialize in producing different things. Unlike in some games, here buildings can be quite expensive (in money and time), so you can't just build everything everywhere - instead, specialize! Then build some trade nodes to link up your city groups, which of course benefit from good roads, ports, etc. All that work building up your internal trade network adds up to a faster growing population, and with external trade links it makes you a crap load of money, which in turn buys armies, which fight wars, which WIN via DOMINATION. Or build a big temple in the mountains! Or both!!
All in all, Oriental Empires has some great ideas that build on its predecessors, while keeping the fundamentals that have worked so well since Civ 1's first settler rolled off the factory floor! Check this baby out!
