A classic bullet hell from the days of actually good and creative mobile games. I remember playing when there were only 2 planes and 3 chapters! Unfortunately, not everything translated well from mobile, and nostalgia can't save a bad port. File editing can though!
Since the game was designed with micro transactions in mind, the upgrades become absurdly expensive! The game can definitely be a challenge without them. Don't worry though! For windows, you can easily edit save data at
...AppData\Local\aotl and set your medallions to a stupidly high value. (100,000 is a good amount)
If you don't want to kill the progression for yourself, a good way to experience the game is to play the missions in order with one plane at a time, and buy an upgrade of choice on your current plane for every mission/boss completed. Ensure your upgrades are evenly distributed for extra balance.
With the mindless grinding removed and a solid progression system implemented, you can now enjoy the game. Or you could just... Beat the game without any upgrades. I plan to try this someday.
Additional notes:
The game is horizontal. I personally feel the game is best experienced in vertical mode. Unfortunately, this isn't mobile, and I don't have the ability to turn my monitor 90 degrees. Not a big deal though.
Achievements are pretty fair, and only a few of them will take a while to get.
The game does have a notable difficulty spike in Chapter 3. The difficulty can be smoothed out by playing Chapter 4 first if you wish.
Finally, the graphics are a little rough on the edges on modern resolutions. The pixel art has aged well though so it kinda balances out.
I would definitely recommend this game on sale if you played it back on the day on mobile or if you are just a big fan of the genre. This game is quite short, and isn't terribly hard to beat, but can be worth the price for sure.
